Want to know what they charge in the UK?

It was as high as £1.35 ($2.10) a litre and it's down to £1.11 ($1.73)

So to fill up my car (40 litres) it was £54 ($84) and now it's £44.40 ($69.20)

40 litres is around 9 gallons

And we're an oil producing nation!!!!!!!!!!!  :idiot2:

On a yearly basis how many different forms of tax are  associated with driving a car in the UK?

I don't want to think about that. As JD said, tax on petrol, or 'gas' as you insist on calling it, was stupidly high. We also have road tax which varies depending on the vehicle and age of the vehicle. My new car is just £30 / year, but that will go up as it gets older. Obviously, commercial vehicle cost one hell of a lot more.

Furthermore, once a car is 3 years old, it has to have an MOT (Ministry of Transport) test to ensure that it meets minimum regulations for safety. That costs another 30 quid or so, if it passes or not, and any issues flagged up have to fixed and the car re-tested.

Goong by what I've heard Clarkson complain about there can be up to 9 or 10 different taxes on your cars.

Clarkson doesn't stop complaining.

As a cyclist, I feel compelled to correct bob in that it isn't "road tax"....it is a "vehicle excise duty". It isn't a tax to use the roads (as it historically was), it's actually a tax covering the pollution omitted by the vehicle. I'm only pointing it out as whenever there is any sort of altercation between a vehicle driver and a cyclist, "road tax" is often brought up as a reason why the cyclist shouldn't be on the roads - and it's incorrect.

Anyway - it's a "pollution" tax and that's one reason why commercial vehicles generally have a higher tax. Some cars, as bob's (which I presume has one of the newer efficient engines or is perhaps a hybrid), have low emissions and therefore pay very low VED. My car (a Nissan Juke) is a 1.6L Turbo petrol and is about £160 a year.

^I stand corrected - being an old git, I tend to use old terminology, but its as JD stated.

Yes, it is a newer 'clean' engine. Panda 4 x 4 with twin-air turbo, thus the very low rate of £30

Talking about being over-taxed and with Vehicle Excise Duty being a tax on pollution, I do not doubt one day in the future the British Government will introduce a tax on farting under the same guise - pollution!

Seriously though tax is required to pay for everything and the more vehicles that move to more efficient engines and less pollution, the more the tax on those vehicles will rise...it has to. The Government can't lose all that tax.

Much the same happened moving from 4 star leaded petrol to unleaded. Unleaded petrol was cheap as hell - as was diesel. All of a sudden, with the demise of 4 star, unleaded and diesel went through the roof.
