Is Real Warfare 2 $34 good?

Hello.

Lately, I've been reading more of Henryk Sienkiewicz, specifically, his book on the northern crusades ( The Knights of the Cross or, Krzyzacy ) http://www.amazon.com/The-Knights-Cross-Krzyzacy-ebook/dp/B004TQ6HCQ/ref=pd_sim_kstore_4?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2

This is essentially the same story told in M2TW:Kingdoms Teutonic campaign and Real Warfare 2: Northern Crusades.

I've played through the M2TW campaign twice.  I've been eyeballing RW2 for a while now.  I think I would enjoy it, but I've spent a lot of money on $20 games lately and I'm finding it hard to justify another $34 on top of it all...especially as I'm not sure I'm sold on it.

I'm not interested in getting this game through another venue for cheaper like Impulse (except Amazon.com, which doesn't have it right now).  I know a few of you have played this game...is it $34 good?  That's not a ton of money, but too much on a big gamble nowadays with some many $10-20 games out there.  For $20 I'd buy it, for $34 I need a few endorsements.  I like the idea, but I already have Mount and Blade and Total War, so I'm not sure this will really scratch that itch in a $34 different way.

Yeah, it goes on sale fairly regularly.

I've enjoyed it, but there are some things I'd like to see added to fill it out some more.  There's supposed to be another update in the works, hopefully it arrives sometime in the near future as I'd like to jump back in soon.

BTW.. thanks for the ebook link.  There are so many Free old public domain books on Amazon that I get lost in the huge mass, spending lots of time downloading them but always missing some that I'd prefer over most.

Nefaro

Here ya go.. it's probably $17.49 good.   Currently on sale at Impulse.

Is it better, worse or the same as the TW Teutonic campaign? That is one of my favorite TW games ever. Maybe THE favorite.

I dunno.  I really couldn't get into M2TW or it's other campaigns very long at a time.

If I were given the option right now, between the two, I'd play Real Warfare.  It's more challenging battles is a plus.  But the campaign isn't like TW - more like Mount & Blade Lite - you command a single army.

I'd strongly prefer to not have to download another client on my computer, so I'll wait for it to go on sale on Steam I guess.  I still have to finish KA1 and KA2 (part of my recent $20 purchases) so I'm not necessarily in a rush to buy another TW-type game.  I'm just a little burned out on Total War- I've been playing it an awfully long time and I'm interested in new takes on it.  I really like KA1 but it is so bloody hard all the time, ugh, sometimes my brain just needs a break!

With respect to the free books, I really enjoyed With Fire and Sword.  It is, essentially, a love story that takes place in the backdrop of the war.  I've read 30% of Knights of the Cross but I think I'm going to put it on hold for a bit.  It's essentially a very similar story to Fire and Sword; another convoluted love story!  I'm 30% in and I can't help but think that I just read this story in Fire and Sword.  No real fighting up to this point so I'm going to hit the pause button.

I have another free book I downloaded called Barbarossa, An Historical Novel of the XII Century  by Conrad von Bolanden.  I'm about 10% into this book and there's been plenty of fighting so I'm a bit more into it.  The writing is fairly easy and somewhat similar to Fire and Sword but not quite as strange.

The King Arthur game received some lowered difficulty, in one of the latest updates to it.  So if you haven't tried it in awhile perhaps you should.

I think you're probably wise in waiting for RW2NC on Steam, because the other places have the limited installs version of Starfarce on them.  Ironically, Starforce's limited online installs is probably one of the easier-going of the lot, although it's still crap just like the rest.  It automatically gives you one install (of 4) back every month no matter what.  I grabbed the Steam version so I wouldn't be beholden to Starforce's continued existence.  Lesser of two stinky evils 'n all that.

I checked the 1C forum about once a week to see if there's any updates on the upcoming patch.

It's said that the patch is nearing completion and some localization (translation) is being done.  No idea what's in it, may just be some bug fixes but I'm hoping there are some nice changes (like in Mitra's mod) as well.

I suspect it is too late for this game at this point since I believe it was originally released in November '11.  At first I kind of liked it, before things fell apart for me and it seemed there was a lack of official support.  I suspect we will routinely see this title in the bargain bin starting real soon.

If anyone finds it on sale for 20.00 or less, please post here. Reading the differences that Nefaro and others put above I would enjoy it.

After you play it vanilla for a bit, and get used to it (beaten like ginger stepchild!) you might want to pick up Mitra's great mod for it, has some good adjustments:
