Word seems to be leaking that Sony has, in effect, done what the hacked Sony emails leaked: shut down the "Amazing" film series in order to reboot through Marvel Studios, with Spider-man debuting in Av3 aka Infinity War Part 1. But not in Cap 3 Civil War (the original proposition) unless in a post-credit cameo since those are often filmed very late in production.

This would tacitly suggest the Civil War plotline won't be wrapped up in Cap3 but will spill into Av3 and 4.

Previous Sony emails indicated a plan to spin Spidey out of the MCU into a new MCU-connected continuity of movies (independent of Raimi and Webb), probably thus not including Andrew Garfield as Parker. (A highly amusing bogus rumor was going around a while back, btw, suggesting Sony wanted a movie with Toby McGuire playing a Spider-villain. Carnage would seem the most fitting option there! -- but Badass Digest debunks the rumor, sorry.)

Deven at Badass thinks it doesn't matter if the arrangement (reported by Latino Review, whose sources have proven extremely good in the past) has been made: Avi Arad remains attached to the Spiderman property, and Kevin Feige who oversees the MCU production will surely balk at working with Arad again. Nor do they need Spidey in the MCU (fan wishing notwithstanding); arguably the MCU may be better with the highest-profile properties (and Man-thing ;) ) already locked out. Nor can Marvel execs force the union. Only Disney, who owns Marvel, could do that.


So, even if the arrangement has been made, big legal and personal bumps remain to be hurdled.

(Oh, be warned, huge possible spoilers for upcoming Phase 3 movies at the LR article. Not that they're very huge for anyone who knows the main beats of the CW storyline, or who remembers where things are in Asgard at the end of Thor 2.)

Keep in mind that the Sinister Six movie hasn't officially been scrapped yet (but probably will be in any case, I expect), and that Amazing 3 is still due for a 2016 release next year. That does not seem likely to hold if the plan is to do a new Spidey in Av3 (or at the post-credit of Civil War, which might or might not make plot sense -- Spidey is a colorful character and would be pretty obvious operating in New York). BUT it isn't impossible that Sony, in order to milk the cash cow, craps out a planned 2016 Amazing 3 to finish up a trilogy set before rebooting (again) via the Marvel Cinematic Universe.


I feel like I should add here, in regard to "craps out", that I'm not one of those people who think Amazing 1 and 2 are crimes against humanity. On the contrary, as aggressively stupid as Am2 so often is, and as wonky as the villain designs are, it looks damn great (for somewhat variable values of "damn great" -- no one anywhere at any time could have seriously thought the Goblin looked great) and the actors are selling hard -- even when they're selling some problematic-to-terrible characterizations. I could probably fan-edit it down to an hour and trim out most of the asinine plot material and be satisfied. And I'm pleasantly surprised that Am1 has held up and improved on repeated viewings. Maybe Am2 will, too; seems doubtful, but I thought the same about Am1 at first. (Also, I'm quite a fan of the video-game sequel to Am1.) When I say "craps out" I mean I mean at this stage Am3 would have to be rushed to make even a Christmas 2016 release, and on a film of this sort that isn't going to help the quality.

Finally, Spidey in the MCU!

Note that the current plan means:

1.) Spidey debuts in an MCU film before his solo film.

2.) The solo film is already scheduled for summer 2017 (two summers away).

3.) No way the Sinister Six film (Vulture & Co.) will premier before the Spidey solo film.

4.) Which by the way means the talented Drew Goddard left the production of the Daredevil miniseries for nothing.

5.) Also no way the SSix film won't be set in the MCU now, even though strictly speaking Sony and not Marvel will still be making it (though that may change eventually, too.)

6.) Which also means Sony may receive (or buy) permission to use previous MCU assets in its Spiderverse movies now, since there will be some degree of overlap.

7.) The timing and schedule means, by deduction, that Spidey can only appear first in Guardians 2 (but impossible for plot reasons, since the director confirms they'll stay cosmic 'in-space' away from Earth, and it would be silly to throw him away in a goofy cameo like Howard the Duck); Cap3 (which would make plot sense in connection with its sort-of "Civil War" storyline, but I previously read that that movie's script has already been locked down so far that even a post-credit cameo may be impossible now despite those traditionally being shot after main production); and Doctor Strange.

Strange holds a curious juncture between main-level, cosmic-level, and street-level Marvel heroes, including a close friendship with Spiderman, so an important cameo in his movie wouldn't be utterly implausible. Could also be worth noting that Marvel's Netflix miniseries are intentionally planned to be subunits of an overall "Defenders" season (with the whole season made up of the pieces plus a final team-up): usually the Defenders aren't so street-level as they'll (initially?) be in the MCU, and traditionally Doctor Strange is who calls together the various rosters of the non-team.

With Marvel planning to phase out RDJ and his Tony Stark character, and also planning to replace him in central importance with Cumberbatch as Steven Strange, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they lean hard on tying his character into as much of the MCU as possible as quickly as possible, by the Defenders/Spidey route.

Incidentally, I think it's hilarious intercompany politics that Marvel's own press release phrases it as "Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man."

Ugh!  Enough of Spidey already!  Five flicks is plenty.

I'm okay if they do something worthwhile with him (the reboot talk makes me cringe but I've heard the plan is just to have the movies running as though an origin story already happened, because that worked so well with the Hulk in Avengers and kind of well with the Hulk in Incredible.)

Mostly I don't want them calling off the development of other properties to work on his films. But I enjoy Spidey, even when he's done painfully, so I'm on board in theory with the MCU showrunners.

I'm fine if Spidey is in a Marvel flick (along with other heroes... and I actually like the Dr. Strange possibilities), I just can't stomach the thought of yet another Spiderman franchise.  Two is enough.
