For a laugh, I vote to change the EU acronym to FU, it sounds a lot more appropriate, as that's all everyone says these days there.

I found a website that makes a comparison between the situation in Greece vs the situation back in Iceland.  Albeit the Greek situation is different and far worse than Iceland's. Being outside the EU helps.  I don't see any benefit of being in the EU club unless you are at the same level as Germany or some of the northern EU countries.  The system doesn't work elsewhere.

I can see why.

That aside, I'll have to step aside & apologize if I get a little too emotional about the situation.  I still have family there, and naturally I can't help but feel worried.  But at the end of the day, I thank the stars my father made the call to emigrate here decades ago & and stay in Canada (his brother went back in the 70's).

There's many who believe Greece & Turkey can only stand to benefit together by more cooperation (and among other countries in the region). There are still a lot who think otherwise and can't get the chip of their shoulders and move on.  Have been to both, and really like both countries and people's.  Maybe it's my wishful thinking, but Turkey has a larger and rising population, and if it can keep the religious bullshit in check and stay secular, it has potential.  Both are stubborn headed, but it comes with the region.

On the other hand, one part of the country is still really different compared to Europe and hence will think differently than Europeans.  You are literally sitting on the crossroads between Europe and Asia. 

Greece was very against admitting Turkey to the EU in the past for whatever reason.  If the EU is still considering that option, that they really take a close look at their books before any reckless lending.

The Marxist Economist who is the Finance Minister for Greece (and no, this is not a dig just a description of the facts) has been claiming that Greece only wants to change 30% of the loan terms.

The EU demanded of Greece - give us your specific offer in writing.  Greece refused to do so.

Meeting broke up.  Greece has to have some bridge loans by the end of the month (less than 2 weeks away) or the wheels fall off.  But the Marxist Economics Finance Minister for Greece fails to even provide a written offer for negotiation.
