It is said that BOTH engines failed during take off.  Now that's scary.

If those pilots managed to thread the needle with no power then they are even more awesome. They deserve statues or something. At least a gov't building or park in their names. RIP guys.

CNN is reporting speculation that the crew may have switched off the other engine - deliberately or accidentally.

This is all very preliminary and CNN is forwarding pretty speculative claims. It will be months before we know the real story. But it may come to pass that either confusion or a second problem compounded the fire in the first engine.

Please guys, let's not speculate.
Fact is that the aircraft went down with both engines off.
How? Did they switch off the good engine by accident? Why did the first engine fail? All that we don't know and won't until an official report is out or a press conference has been given.

Statues for the pilots or Human error by switching off the good engine incorrectly are both at the opposite ends of the spectrum.

(They did manage to spare most of the bridge, too, when they easily might have smatted it and rolled over into all the oncoming traffic.)

The news here in Holland reports that many TransAsia ATR pilots are being suspended for either not passing a mandatory test after the crash (by order of the authorities, to evaluate proficiency in relation to engine failure procedures) or not showing up for the test at all.  :uglystupid2:
