In February 2015, the leading independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta reported[89] that it obtained documents which showed that Russia's government developed a strategy for invading and breaking up Ukraine even before Viktor Yanukovych was removed from power. The documents outline plans for annexation of Crimea and the southeastern portions of the country, including Donetsk and Luhansk, and also areas in the Kharkiv region, very closely describing the events that actually followed after Yanukovych's fall. The documents also describe plans for a public relations campaign which would seek to justify Russian aggression.[90][91][92]

No. Crimea doesn't belong to Russia. It legally ceded it to Ukraine in the last century. Next it will claim that Alaska belongs to Russia because the Tsar shouldn't have sold it. Besides, Russia will be building a bridge from Russia to Kerch soon enough anyways. I like the idea of everything having to enter and leave Crimea on one bridge that's easily monitored.

A top political nemesis of President Vladimir Putin was shot and killed early Saturday in central Moscow, Russian police said, one day before an opposition rally was scheduled to take place.

Boris Nemtsov, 55, a former deputy prime minister, was shot four times from a passing car as he was walking on a bridge just outside the Kremlin. The Kremlin said that Putin will personally oversee the investigation into his death.

The shooting potentially could create a political crisis in Russia, regardless of the motive or who was behind the shooting.

Yes - quite. Putin is dangerous and a nut job. I love the bit where it says Putin will "Personally" oversee the investigation. Well - that's reassuring then - I often wonder about these kinds of people just how mad they must be to think something like that would be said and it would somehow not mean everyone thinks it is a cover up. I mean what's the friggin point of saying that ?

Even though the killing will make Putin look bad, him being the obvious suspect, he may have felt he had no choice if this Nemtsov guy actually had the evidence he said he did of Russia's direct role in the Ukraine conflict and was ready to release it very soon.

It also may have been a faction within Putin's regime who had more to lose than just irritating him, or even a criminal element that was itself directly involved with supplying the conflict's rebel side, with unofficial Putin sanction. I'm willing to bet that in the Russia the 'roles' of the Russian Mob, the secret police, the big business sector, and of high gov't officials have overlapped so much that Russia is effectively a Mafia caliphate.
