I fired up X3 Rebirth with some mods last night, and I am hooked.  The game has come a long way... here is me getting a Container Ship tour after dropping off a passenger on a quick run mission.  This is the Bridge Mod..

PE...are they Steam workshop mods? I've been tempted to get this for a long time and it's on sale on Gamersgate for $20.00 (50% off).  It's a Steam key. The Steam forum for this game has been mixed....some say its current state is great, others say it still has serious issues.

Yes, all Steam Workshop mods I am using.  So far I have had no issues with the game.  I walked away from the game at release and wanted to wait for a while until I got back in and I think now is a good time.  Here is an overview of 3.0 and other features in the game https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRNrultsQ-Ti7bEZvxJU58YrYiDy4n4JM

Overall I am happy for 1 they changed the menu system so now you do not have to go to the side console, and with several mods installed I think it is where I like it to be.  I think some go into it thinking it is a combat game, and to a extent it is, however this is more about economics and building an empire.  The graphics are still very good and the game to me is very immersive.  I started the Sandbox basic start and it can be a little overwhelming because there there is no one there to hold your hand, you have to explore and figure what you want to do.  Presently I am saving some cash to board and take over a ship, however you have to have marines and a marine officer....

It appears the game community is split, but I am enjoying it far more than I did before.

Make sure you don't have a gamepad and controller plugged in simultaneously.  That's what your issues sound like.

X: Rebirth has now been out for so long and has been patched and updated so many times, that it might be worth trying out of mere curiosity. You can do so, for free, next weekend on Steam.

From 13 to 15 March, all X games (including X: Rebirth) will be having one of those free Steam weekend things. They're pretty big, complex space games, so if you do fancy trying one out over the freebie weekend I'd recommend just picking one and sticking with it. X3: Terran Conflict is probably the best of the bunch I've played (though I never tried Albion Prelude.)

I tried - admittedly not with any mods - but they've done something graphically to it that just doesn't swing with "space simming".

I can't place my finger on the hot spot - but it's more like travelling through a nightmare than space and it's brighter than a Gay Pride march

I've been waiting to get back into the game again too.
With Elite being on hold (for me) for the forseeable future I am still itching to get into a space epos. I might have to dip in my toes to see what the water is like at this point.

If I was going to go back to one of the X's, it wouldn't be Rebirth I have to say. It would like be X3 Reunion or (perhaps) Albion Prelude.
