Quite a mob bearing down on the Prince!

What is the significance of having the stats either on the short or long side? Does it denote different types of units or what formation a unit is in?

Yep.  Column is sort of the default state (eg.  = general order in close terrain = post-charge cavalry).  It's only 1 MP to change formation for inf and no MP for cav (there are some facing restrictions).  The turns are 30 minutes long so that seems reasonable.
