If I didn't just pick up Dawn's Early Light, I would be tempted to pick one up.... Urban-Operations looks really good.

Gary, how did you find the replayablility of Phantom Fury? I've heard folks say that once you figure out a formula the game becomes stale...and in short order as well....

Wondering the same thing.

Didn't someone here mention that replayability "formula" issue?

GJK

There is no winning formula that I've found nor do I think that there could be one because the game is so luck driven; you'll never face exactly the same situation twice which does add to replayability but if you dislike such randomness you may not like this game.  There are some tactics that can be used though despite what you may be facing including when to leave security elements and how to best utilize the M1A1 and weapons teams as well as the limited assets that you have at your disposal.  This is the type of game that you'll play 3 or 4 times in a row trying to either win or more likely, to best your previous attempts and then you'll tire of it a bit and set it aside as I have but just talking about it again has me itching to set it back up - which is another positive, set up is fairly quick so you can rip through a few playings of it in short order.

Here's the a statement on BGG about Phantom Fury being formulaic:

From Lee Brimmicombe-Wood:
QuotePhantom Fury is an odd one. It has some super-simple mechanics, but once you get rolling, it's very much a rinse and repeat game where you cycle the same tactics and processes again and again. There's really only one answer to the tactical puzzle, and once you've cracked it the game is about process.

Lee is a great game designer and I agree with his assessment to a point.  It is a bit of a "rinse and repeat" in that the tactics used to clear each block of houses *can* be the same.  Here's where I differ however:

1. Getting to a new block, especially if you have to cross the street.  Crossing streets in this game is brutal and you'll more times than not come under fire when you do it (the M1A1 is a huge help here though).  If you get caught in the street, there's a good chance that someone is going to get pinned in the street.  Then your tactics change to one of a rescue attempt providing cover trying to get the guy out of there.

2. Once you get to a new block, depending on what you've detected (which may or may not be accurate and is subject to change once you actually get in there), you have to decide on whether to use some of your assets and then decide on whether you're going bottom up or top down to clear it.  Top down is always the better choice (except when you rush in to an IED!) but sometimes getting in position to do that is more dangerous than just going bottom up.  So you have a deal of decisions to make going block to block.

Then the "puzzle" becomes how much do you leave behind to keep areas that you've already cleared from being re-infiltrated.  Because every game has random chit draws to populate the map with baddies, you never get the same puzzle twice.  This keeps the game fresh.

But yes, to agree with Lee, it is repetitive a good bit in that you are clearing block by block.  It's how you get to the block and with how you do it that will vary throughout the game.
