Skyfall was much closer to the Bond books than the previous movies have been

Casino Royale seemed like a reasonably faithful adaptation.

This is why I will argue that the Brosnan years were the apex of the classical form.

I'm not against the reboot from Casino Royale onward -- I've enjoyed all three films (even though they're rarely 'fun'), and have watched each numerous times, and I would even argue they're better films overall. But they don't really feel like James Bond films. Which was the razor's edge they were walking by intentionally making them grittier and more realistic (sort of): could they make some Bourne Identity films that were legitimately James Bond films?

The Bourne films are total abortions.  They are great action flicks, but sooooooooo disconnected from the original Bourne stories that they shouldn't be allowed to claim the name.

Indeed. Solid action flicks, but the book are sooooooooooo much better.

Except for non-horror stories written by Stephen King.  I found the film adaptations for Shawshank, Stand By Me, and The Green Mile to all be superior to the original works.

Ditto the Philip K Dick short story that was the basis for Total Recall ("We Can Remember It For You Wholesale").
