$9.99 for CK II and $12.49 for the CK II Collection

http://store.steampowered.com/sale/ParadoxWeekend_2012

p.s.  This was already mentioned here (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=1790.msg36590#msg36590) by CptHowdy, but I thought it deserved its own thread since the sale is so short...

Dammit all to hell...

EDIT: I could not resist getting the whole schmear for 12.49. Bought it.

HA!

I think I might have to pick up some of the DLC, not that I even need any of it...

^That's what got me. How can I say no to all the DLC for that price? I can't.

Anyone have any recommendations of a good first faction to play as? And some accompanying reading?

I'm still trying to decide on a good one too.  The tutorial I am watching now starts with an Irish Earl so I am tempted to start there.

Yeah, I tried starting as Scotland but quickly found that I wasn't too sure what was going on much of the time.  I watched a some of the tutorial videos and restarted with one of the Irish counties.   Now I'm just kinda waiting for stuff to happen.  Made some babies and now I'm just training them up, trying to figure out why they all want my head on a pike, and trying to get my council to fabricate a cause for war with the neighbouring county.  No luck there so far.

Gusington

The tutorials appear to be quite detailed. This might suck me in sooner rather than later. Love the map overlays. I'm thinking starting with an eastern faction like a Greek or Bulgarian one, or maybe Vlach. Maybe Italy.

All I need is time.

One of the best pieces of advice from those tutorials that I needed to hear was the first 50-100 years I need to be patient and speed the game up especially starting with 1 county.  Once you get later in the game and acquire more territory he said you rarely need to speed it up.

Yeah, I saw that too.

I think I must've picked a dud of a starting county.  No cassus belli with anyone and I can't seem to force one even though 25 years have passed in-game.  Can't seem to marry off the nitwits to anything higher than courtiers either so no chance of inheriting a title.  Oh well, it's been a good learning experience if nothing else.

Gus, I bought the Dynastic Shields DLC but I couldn't justify any of the others.  I was about to grab the Mongol DLC but then I found out you can't play as them so I couldn't see much point.  Same for the music.  I usually turn it way down or completely off anyway.

Bison

I'm a sucker for DLC when its costs a couple of quarters for it.

Silent Disapproval Robot

They've gotta offer up something I find useful.  I miss the pre-DLC days where modders would take care of most of this stuff or the devs would release a mega-expansion with a bunch of good stuff in it.  Oh well, DLC's here to stay so whatcha gonna do?

I had no problem paying for Rise of the Samurai or Fall of the Samurai for Shogun 2.  Both were great expansions that offered up a lot of new content.  Same for the Ikko-Ikki and Hattori clans.  They had enough that was unique about them to make them stand out.

No way in hell will I buy the 4 new clans for Fall of the Samurai though.  They offer nothing but some new skins and a few stat boosts that I can create myself just by altering 2 lines in a .ini file.

I'm more worried about the F2P push.  The head of Crytek said that all future titles from his company will be F2P and use the micro-transaction model like World of Tanks.  On the Chinese server for Crytek's new Warface game, you have to pay a fee to use voice chat even.  No thanks.

Gusington

I like me some new medieval music. And for 12.49 for everything I cannot argue.

I bought the new clans for Shogun 2 also. For 5.00 each it's worth it to me and I know I'll take each clan for spin eventually.

Diff'rent strokes and all that.

A lot of people swear by one of the small Counties or Duchies in Ireland.    Those types of little counties may be good for a short span of initial learning but you'll want to move up to Duke level (or have fun getting there as a Count!) if you want to start having the real fun.  ;)

I prefer one of the Rurik dukes in Russia- Novgorod or Polotsk - easier to expand by already having neighboring pagans (free casus bellis although they start off quite heavy in troops), some more vassals, and you'll have LOTS of allies in your Ducal relatives so you don't have to worry about your bacon gettin' sizzled too easily.  As an added bonus, they're not Catholic so no worries about the Pope or all your churches sending their money to him instead of you, crusades, etc (even though that's one part of the game that's lacking in content right now).

CptHowdy

i picked parma. my guy rules corsica as well but my liege is a duchess and her liege is the holy roman emperor. big battles for succession going on now everyone keeps throwing their support to whatever duke is strongest that month! good to start off small. i cant imagine trying to wade through all of that stuff with 20+vassals to start.

Martok

Has anyone purchased the music DLC, and if so, if it's any good?  I'm always a sucker for decent game soundtracks, especially when they help with/increase immersion.

Hey, at least you outlasted me for once!  You can take some small comfort in that.  ;)
