I remember our family gathered around the radio listening to this, when I was a kid.

I have a 12 cassette tape boxed version of this.  I have listened to it many times.  I remember watching it on PBS with my grandma when I was very young.  LOVE this version!

The radio play was always the best incarnation of the story in my opinion (I think it was also the first).  I still haven't watched the film, for fear of it doing irreparable harm to my memories...

Don't watch the film if you want to preserve the memory of th books or even the radio series. It's fun but not even close to the real story.
