Is there a web resource somewhere that compares the various Republic/Rebel and Imperial craft as to their strengths and weaknesses and how each is best used in battle?

Rebels:

A-Wing.  Very fast, very maneuverable.  Weak hull, weak shields, somewhat weak firepower from lasers (has concussion missiles in some games, not in others).  Fly it like you'd fly a Spitfire.  Keep turning and extend if you get into trouble.

B-Wing.  Slow and poor maneuverability.  Decent hull. Strong shields.  Awesome firepower with lasers, ion cannons, and torpedoes.  Fly it like you'd fly an SBD Dauntless or a TBF Avenger.  Use it to go after big targets and rely on your escort for fighter cover.

X-Wing.  Good speed.  Good maneuverability.  Good hull.  weak shields.  Good firepower from lasers and torpedoes.  Fly it like a robust dogfighter.  Think P-47, Tempest, F4U Corsair, etc.

Y-Wing.   Fairly slow and not very maneuverable (but better than the B-Wing).  Good hull, decent shields.  Mediocre firepower from lasers.  Has torpedoes (and sometimes missiles in some games), and a turret with blasters or ion cannons.  Fly it like a ground attack aircraft.  Think A-20, Typhoon, Bf 110.

Imperials:

TIE Fighter.  Good speed,  good maneuverability.  Terrible hull.  No shields.  mediocre firepower.  Fly it like a Zero.  Keep moving and kiss your ass goodbye if you get hit.

TIE Interceptor.
Very fast, good maneuverability.  Weak hull.  No shields.  Good firepower.  Fly it like an FW 190 with a glass jaw.  Be aggressive but use your turning ability to get out of the way if on the defensive.

TIE Advanced.  Good speed, decent maneuverability.  Decent hull, mediocre shields.  Mediocre firepower.  Fly it like a P-38.  It's not really great at anything but it can stand a bit more punishment than the other Imperial fighters.

TIE Bomber.
Poor speed, poor maneuverability.  Decent hull.  No shields.  Weak guns, good bombs, torps, etc.  Fly it like a Betty or a Do217.  Try to sneak in and hit the enemy's big stuff while your escort keeps the fighters busy.

You got that from playing Star Wars X-wing didn't you?

Silent Disapproval Robot

That and all the old LucasArts games like X-Wing: Alliance as well as from the old West End Games Star Wars RPG and the accompanying board game, Star Warriors.

One issue is increased ping.  If you have the ability to choose which server to join you can effectively minimize your ping.  If it comes down to often having a 90+ms ping vs 40, that would be kind of a big deal for me.

The other big question people are having is how will friends/clanmates be able to play together.  I don't think they have gone into specifics - they just kind of threw this out there (no server browser).  Epic trolling really - go EA :)

I'm of the opinion that this will hamstring the game to some degree, almost no question it would be better with a server browser.  A lot will depend on how many servers there are, what gameplay variations are allowed, etc.

Any restrictions on servers kills clan play; Cod was Killed the same way!!! so i haven't bought in years.

COD was killed? Tell that to the suits at Activision watching every year's release sell millions of copies.

People will complain about this, but history shows it's unlikely to actually affect the bottom line enough to really affect anything.

One question....why do they do this? I mean, does it somehow make it easier to develop, or cheaper to run their servers? Whats the incentive from the developer's perspective.

On one hand, it gives them a finer control over the gameplay users will experience.  I doubt they care too much about this, however.

I suspect they (suits mostly) want to be able to deliver a product as close to identical as they can make it across all platforms.   Hopefully VR will drive a nice big wedge between PC and consoles - at least until improvements in technology (truly) blur the distinction between the two.

Dedicated servers will be featured in game.

I just read something that might prevent me from buying this game;

Even though there will be dedicated servers, a Dutch gaming site claims that the game will not allow you to choose a server from a list, but rather the game will choose one for you based on your level/greatness.

Now, I have a dedicated group of friends with varying skill levels. If that means we won't ever play together, EA won't get my money.
