Is there such a thing as a tactical/operational sub game - im not interested in driving a sub and plotting the torpedoes (Silent Hunter), but id like to send out wolf packs and sink stuff from my command bunker somewhere

LongBlade

Hmmm. I don't think so...except.

IIRC Naval War just released an editor (I think I'm right, but don't buy it before double checking). It's modern era, but there's no reason you couldn't play with a fleet of subs by cooking up your own scenario.
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

DoctorQuest

You appear to be talking WWII......

Modern era there is Fleet Command and Harpoon. I do think there are some WWII databases for some of the Harpoon games.
"Everything you read on the internet is true." - Benjamin Franklin

"Zero-G and I feel fine....." - John Glenn

"I reject your reality and substitute my own." - Adam Savage, inventor of the alternative fact.

I just watched a YouTube video and realized I did try Wolfpack.  Not sure why I didn't end up playing it; too long ago.  AOD and SHCE are very good despite being old DOS games.

If you're willing to take a step towards strategy gaming, rather than pure wargame, then Defcon allows you to command nuclear subs and all sorts of naval units to protect your ICBM silo's.

Probably not what you're after though.

If you can go analog there are two board games from Compass Games that simulate the strategic side of running a submarine fleet, one Allied Pacific (Silent War) and one Axis Atlantic (Steel Wolves). The best part? they are Solitaire Play. The worst? they cost some serious scratch.
Vituð ér enn - eða hvat?  -Voluspa

Nothing really rocks and nothing really rolls and nothing's ever worth the cost...

I got my time machine, got my 'electronic dream!"
-Sonic Reducer, -Dead Boys

Was it JD that posted an AAR of Steel Wolves at WG? it did look like a good time waster

Mr Wing at some point you need to tell me how to return a certain favour, or send you some Benjamins (or what ever theyre called)

"Mr Wing"... makes me sound like an oriental gangster  ;D.
No worries. One of these days there'll be a sale not available in the USA and then I'll be calling in that favor. <---spoken with caricature Chinese Godfather voice :D).

Not a computer game, but one other Solitaire board game is U Boat Leader by DVG Games. It deals with U Boat wolf packs and has been getting good reviews. It's listed at $70, but I've seen for $35 on the NWS game site. As a owner of Silent War, it also looks a lot easier to play.

Toonces

I don't know why they don't strap a strategic layer onto the Silent Hunter series engine.
"If you had a chance, right now, to go back in time and stop Hitler, wouldn't you do it?  I mean, I personally wouldn't stop him because I think he's awesome." - Eric Cartman

"Does a watch list mean you are being watched or is it a come on to Toonces?" - Biggs

Silent Disapproval Robot

Because the ability to stroll around the torpedo tubes and give the cook a shoulder massage took precedence in the design priority list.
