Having played Wurm Online in the past, I have to say that this could be awesome with a Grogheads server.  Sadly however (and bafflingly), there's no Linux version, so I don't give a shit until there is.  :-\

Interesting trailer over on Steam.  If I got it right, appears it is an MMORPG but can be played solo as well, and by solo I mean on your own server with only those you invite to join in.

Right.  You're basically paying for your own Wurm Online instance, but you only pay once.

It's had a number of large updates since I last played, so grain of salt etc.

It's a MMORPG with fully destructible and deformable scenery, with an emphasis on an Ultima Online-like skill tree and realism.  Virtually anything you do is a multi-stage process (refining, smelting, chopping, carpentry etc) so that even making a basic shack is quite an endeavour if you don't join a group.

I played on a PvE server and got myself hooked up with a guild that caters to newcomers, so I had a bed I could use and there were noob farms and noob mines wherein you could level up your production skills.  Like Eve Online, it's almost unplayable solo but sublime in a good group.  It's one of those MMORPGs in which you can live an alternate life, making stuff and farming and whatnot.  The actual PvE content is almost an afterthought for a well-defended village whose inhabitants never venture out into the wilds.

The world is absolutely enormous and would take a very long time to traverse on foot.  It's also extremely detailed, with many varieties of flora and fauna, and a huge skill tree catering to pretty much anything you could want to do in the game.

It takes patience.  Skill development is slow and you'll fail all but the simplest of tasks multiple times while you level up your skills.  But eventually you'll find yourself dragging your large cart (that you made yourself) to a field (that you ploughed yourself) to harvest food (that you grew and tended yourself), to take back to your home (that you built yourself using materials you collected/constructed/mined yourself) etc.  You get the idea.

It's a lovely game, and I'm often on the verge of returning to it.  Like I said, get yourself in with a good, welcoming group and the world is your oyster.  Not one for action diehards, more people who want to carve out their own slice of a gigantic virtual world.  Daunting, but hugely rewarding.

That's a philosophical musing, not a condemnation of this particular game!  :)

Heh, yep, and it's all culminated in allowing us to simulate a world in which we didn't!

I am was almost interested until you said that the PvE portion of the game was an afterthought. I am more of an explorer than a builder, but I do like building. Its just that when I go to explore, I want to explore an interesting world. Are there monster liars? Is there the occasional dragon liar? Do lots of monsters roam the landscape? Tell me what the PvE experience is like, if you could.

It's an afterthought for those who avoid it, i.e. by spending their time in well defended villages.  There's certainly plenty of hostile mobs and stuff to find, and plenty of room for exploration.  However I didn't do any of that so I couldn't tell you, sorry.

I found most tasks painfully slow, but equipment degraded incredibly quickly. My old UO clan had some presence there for a while but even the diehards eventually got tired.
My local friends that played called it "Amish Online".

Yeah, it could well be that that kind of stuff will be configurable.  For example, it's already confirmed that housing deeds can be set to be free of charge.

Wurm Unlimited came out today and im going to give it a whirl. If anyone else has the game and wants to play and or host im open to the idea but honestly have no clue what im doing but am willing to learn as the game does look interesting. FYI Green Man Gaming has the game , signing up is free and they have a 20% off coupon which expires soon and puts the total around 21 dollars. ;D
