Great flick. I have it on my DVD shelf. Mason again played Rommel a few years later in the Desert Rats.

Mad Magazine did a parody of the Rat Patrol.  In one scene, the germans accidently blow up a VW.
"Did anyone look like James Mason?"
No.
"Good, we didn't kill General Rommel."

Wow! I've been meaning to look up both movies for a while, and was not even slightly aware James Mason played Rommel!

Mason was great in the role. Rommel himself would have approved, had he been around to see the movie.

Of course, had Rommel lived, then Churchill might have been more flexible on considering a conditional German surrender- provided Rommel were the one to lead whatever German government apparatus was left in charge, and we would have had a whole different movie ending.

Fun fact: my last German teacher in college lived as a next-door neighbor to Rommel and his family when she was a little girl.

She was, however, kind of insane, so maybe I should say she claimed to have lived as one of his family's neighbors.
