Nuke Arms Race Begins

Amid fears of an atomic arms race in the Middle East, a senior United Arab Emirates official has told a top U.S. lawmaker that it too might seek the right to enrich uranium that Iran has asserted under the recently signed nuclear deal.

The landmark Iran accord to curb its nuclear weapons in exchange for economic sanctions relief allows Tehran to enrich uranium. In barely noticed testimony last month, Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the UAE's ambassador in Washington, Yousef al-Otaiba, had informed him in a telephone call that the country no longer felt bound by its previous nuclear agreement with the United States.

"He told me, `Your worst enemy has achieved this right to enrich. It's a right to enrich now that your friends are going to want, too, and we won't be the only country,' " Royce said in a phone interview with The Associated Press, elaborating on his testimony.

Let's pretend for a minute that our elected officials aren't idiots.  Let's also pretend that they knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they made the deal with Iran.  My question is, why?  Why make that deal?  What is to be gained by letting Iran off of double secret probation?  What do they have, or have promised us, that we would POSSIBLY be ok with letting them enrich uranium?  It can't be oil, we've got gobs of that.  It can't be help with Daesh, Russia is taking care of that.  Maybe it's help with the Taliban?  Maybe they said they'd be our friends and take our side against China/Russia/some unknown super villain?  I don't know, but, it sure seems like if some dumbass from the backwoods of the South can figure out it's a bad idea, that the people who are more closely involved would figure out it's a bad idea and not do it.

The alternative was going to be an inevitable military strike. Most likely by the Israelis, but likely aided and abetted by us - assuming we weren't in the lead.

There is a remote hope that the Iranians won't do anything crazy with a nuke, and Obama, I'm sure, wanted to give that sliver of hope some life.

I listened to an interview with former Secretary Gates. He made it clear that Obama was highly skeptical that the military was giving him the best advice. Gates also indicated that Biden was behind that paranoia (if that's the right word) and that there were others, though he wouldn't name names.

Given that kind of pretzel logic it's a wonder the world isn't in bigger flames.

Completing his geopolitical diagnosis, Mr. Khamenei also predicted that Israel would no longer exist in 25 years.
