Gods help me -- I've purchased Civilization IV

My entire life, I've somehow managed to not play any of the Civ titles.  It was never on purpose, really -- I just never got around to it. 

That will change, however, when my copy of Civ IV: Complete arrives from Amazon.  OJsDad had noticed Amazon was selling it for $25.50 (physical copy), which I deemed to be a reasonable enough price.  Now I just have to wait til it gets delivered (I'm guessing sometime the first week of July) to check it out. 

I'm simultaneously anticipating and dreading this...

Whenever you are ready to get serious about playing this, drop me a line.  I am certainly not the best player of this game, but I sure do enjoy playing this game.  As a matter of fact, as soon as I am done reading the forums this morning, it will be on to my ongoing Rhye's and Fall of Civilization scenario I have going.  I am the Middle Kingdom of China and I am getting my a$$ handed to me.

I recall attempting to play the first Civ, or maybe the second, and also giving Alpha Centauri a try long ago too.  I just couldn't get into them back then.

A couple years ago, an old friend of mine gave me his Civ 4 because he couldn't get into it.  So I figured.. "what the hell, surely it's been improved over the years", and fired it up.   I enjoyed Civ 4 for the light turn-based game it is.   I certainly enjoyed it more than my earlier tries at the series. 

I'm sure you'll also have some fun with it here & there.

Weird, I just reinstalled Civ4 earlier today!  Started a game as the Egyptians.  Will probably play it quite a bit tonight.

Why did you go for 4 and not 5, Martok?

I also own Civ 4. Let me know when your copy arrives if you want to try some multiplayer. We will be at the same level as I have not yet played it.

I've wanted to play an updated Colonization, and I'm a bit wary of just how much a Civ mod would play like the original.  I don't have the Complete Edition, obviously.

So tell me more.   Is it just a wannabe mod or is that actually a good representation?

I had Civ4 and I think I sold it.

I think on the whole the Civ Series is beautiful conceived.  However, I could never deal with end game when there are tons of military units and wars require the move of each and every unit.

It just gets so tedious.

I did play quite a bit of the original Civ.

Also, I don't know who said it, but despite all the automation aids which were added through the versions, Civ1 has the most snappy game play feel.  I think I can agree with that.  Too many games tend to ever increasing complexity and lose the essence which made them what they were.

In my opinion, Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization is not as much fun as the original Colonization. There have been some improvements--galleons can carry more than one treasure, ships can carry wagons, and the graphics are updated. But the mechanics of immigration as well as those of educating/training colonists was changed and "on-the-job training" was removed. The Fountain of Youth and the Custom House were done away with. The cost of horses was increased dramatically in the first patch, so unless you have a Seasoned Scout waiting on the immigrant dock when the game starts, you may as well start over.

Why did you go for 4 and not 5, Martok?

Three reasons, mainly.  In no particular order: 


1.)  Civilization IV doesn't require Steam. 

2.)  As I mentioned over in the Civ V: Gods and Kings thread, there's long been a pretty solid consensus (at least on just about all the game sites I've ever frequented) that Civ IV is generally considered excellent.  On the other hand, opinion on Civ V is clearly far more...divided.  If I'm going to spend money -- and even more importantly, time -- on one of these two titles, then Civ IV seemed like the safer bet. 

3.)  Whenever possible -- and assuming I can stand to wait long enough! -- I like to purchase a game with all its expansions/DLC in a single package/bundle.  Civ IV already comes in such a package, whereas it's obviously going to be a while yet before we'll see something similar for Civ V.

I was once a Civ junkie.  Wasted many many many years playing all the civs particularly Civ3.  I'm a reformed addict now but if you ever get the urge to PBEM or live MultiPlay let me know.  I guess I could delve into the abyss again!  :D
