After a trek through a radioactive, death claw infested hell hole last night I decided to start working on my first settlement tonight. Didn't think I would enjoy it that much but I'm finding it strangely relaxing. I got all the junk cleaned up. Left most of the destroyed houses and cars intact as they should provide good cover during an attack.

Now I have to trek all the way to diamond city and back, I don't use the map fast travel, to get the resources, food, etc that I have stashed there. I thought resources stored in a work station where supposed to be available anywhere but maybe that only applies to settlements you have a supply line between or within the same settlement.
PanzersEast: Have to think to myself.... will I play the first one by the Winter Sale?  Probably not, then I should remove Dragonfall
PanzersEast: but that is thinking too logically.... and Steam Sales are about ignoring Logic

Wreck those cars and houses.  They're not good cover, they're just useless points for resources.

Reinvest the scrapped cars and house for walls and turrets, and watch the assaults on your settlements slaughtered.

Had my first crash - it was whilst exiting.

A couple of questions if I may...

First...is there anywhere to sell all the crap you find? I find myself picking everything up and lugging it around and then having to drop it all in some random location (or my "base"). I know a lot of it helps you make stuff, but when you aren't at a level to make something OR you don't have all the gear, it'd be nice to have a) somewhere to store your stuff and b) sell the crap.

For example, if I need product x, y and z to make a turret and I only have x and y,  I'd like to be able to store x and y at the place where I want to build the turret (so I don't just get rid of it) and then go looking for z. Also, I'd like to be able to sell a,b and c so I don't have to cart the crap around.

I'm very early in, only getting to Concorde but I do know someone who is level 15 and they said they haven't found anywhere to sell anything

Second...fixing my armour. I have found two stations now where I can build shit and enhance weapons, but I haven't found anywhere (unless I've just forgotten) to fix/enhance armour. My suit is already buggered and I need to fix it.

Lastly - is there any 5mm ammo around for the minigun picked up in Concorde? I think I was meant to kill that big beast with the minigun but instead I used my ammo up on the raiders!

Thanks

Oh - and it was really sad to see that I sent my dog after the big bugger animal in Concorde (I thought it would say "bugger that mate") and it got injured. A Stimpak fixed it - but it was whining and crawling around  :'(

And one last question - about resources lying around.

So I've read people making their bases etc and using scrap lying around. I am currently looking to build something that requires rubber. Where I am I see a lot of tyres lying around - but looking at them brings nothing up. Am I presuming I can't do anything with them? Or am I just not at the correct level?

Your companion can be used to carry stuff during your travels.

Dump all of the junk you pick up into any workbench, preferably the ones in Sanctuary.  All of the things you find will be placed in a central location to be used by any type workbench anywhere in the world.

You can only build structures and such in areas around settled areas you own.  So if you do a side quest for somebody and complete it they might join your community on a patch of land that you can develop.

I couldn't find any 5mm ammo for the mini gun in Concord.  I won't spoil it for you unless you want the exact location but there is an area I found not too far away from Concord that has another minigun plus ammo you can 'take'.   ;)

Fixing armour requires an armourer's workbench.  The bench has a brownish mud colored table top with a dark grey vice on it's left.  There is one located in Sanctuary but there are at least two others I found in the general area of Concord and Lexington.

Thanks very much W8.

Good news about the workbench. I've just been dumping it.

I'll find the minigun - thanks. I may be back if I can't though  ;)

What about stores and the like? In Fallout 3 there were stores you could use bottle caps to buy things and sell things for bottle caps - is this game about making your own gear? So now shops to trade?

I know this will sound like a fanboy-ish effusion, but -- I was really struck last night by this game's absolutely amazing artistic design. Warts with clunky UI and annoying bugs aside -- the world of the Commonwealth is incredible, and particularly the "alternative future 1950s world" of vehicles, buildings, you name it.

I had a moment of sheer delight of a kind I can't recall in a game in a long while -- when I hacked a terminal and got a Robotron "Robby the Robot" to activate. Watching the thing come to life, lumber out of its stall, and then lumber around while occasionally blurting "protect and serve!" in classic 50s sci-fi robot voice... Not exactly sure why, but watching this happen pleased me to no end.

The atomic cars and "Wicked Lines" freight trucks, the diners and super markets and gas stations -- the crash site with the super airliner.... I just think the sheer imagination and attention to detail with these things is amazing. It's a world I love just wandering around in far more than previous Bethesda games (and I thought the world of Skyrim was pretty damn good).

Anyhoo -- yeah, the game's not perfect and maybe a let down in some ways but man, did Bethesda achieve something great in creating this fantasy alt-'50s world to play in ...

You're not being a fanboi, you're just admiring a work of art in the form of Fallout 4.   ;D

I agree with you 100% though.  This game is the result of a labor of love.

I started playing Fallout 2 last night...had it free from GOG during some sale a few years ago, it and Fallout 1. I don't like 1 because of the whole limited-time-water-chip thing, although I do remember playing it and finishing with plenty of time. With 2 I played through it also but don't remember if I won it or not. Last night, going through the temple, I just remembered how frustrating it is to start...punch ant, miss, walk three steps away, ant follows but doesn't have enough AP to try to hit you, take another swing at ant and miss again, rinse and repeat about 20 times before ant finally dies. Stupid 43% melee to-hit. More like 4%.

So far I've only found a wandering caravan who was peddling some decent armour and some other trinkets.  One bit of gear, a very nice high defense chest plate, was about 1500 bottle caps.  I think you can find more traditional merchants in the big cities such as Cambridge.  I like how you can't really find anything out in the wilderness or small towns.

Btw Concord and Lexington, the two towns I've visited in game so far, are laid out nothing like they are in real life.  Still though I'm getting a kick out of the game being set in Massachusetts!

There's a diner outside of Concord to the west that ends up becoming a vendor after you do a small quest/encounter there.

There are LOTS of vendors in Diamond City which is set up in Fenway Park.  I'd recommend heading there as there's a ton of good side quests and resources.

Once you get the settlers to Sanctuary, press V to bring up the build menu.  Highlight an item then you can scrap it for resources.

When you get to a friendly settlement, visit the red workbench and transfer all your junk items to storage.  Later on as you begin to craft, you will have a good stockpile of resources.  Try to pick up everything you can and bring back to storage.  In the beginning Gears and Oil are very useful to build MG turret level 1.

At higher skill level (local leader lvl 2) all your settlement workshops will linked together.  Makes the end game crafting much easier.

Thanks all. Great tips.

I found the other minigun - unfortunately, it killed me!  >:D

Yep. I live about 20 minutes from both, and the FO4 versions bear no resemblance to genuine articles -- nor does the rest of "the Commonwealth's" geography for that matter.

No biggie though -- I was hardly expecting geographic realism. I'm just pleased Fenway plays a prominent role in-game.  :knuppel2:

Do you mean in FO4 or in real life?  The answer in both cases is no (God I suck -- sorry excuse for an American -- I've lived in Cambridge for the past 18 years and somehow have never visited Ol' Ironsides. But with a 5 year old with a budding interest in history, I'm sure we'll get out there before too long  :)

I am really enjoying this game - warts and all.
