Very well said panzerde.  This is why I'm content to let the Russians slug it out over there.  We don't belong there because we are not prepared to play the game on their level.  Politically, our public would never let us, their hearts would soften unless a nuke or a dirty bomb went off in Dallas, and Kansas City, and San Diego, and Orlando.  That would galvanize the entire West because it would galvanize America.

Obama and Putin meet today, I wonder, based on what Obama said at the press conference, if he struck some kind of deal with Putin.

One thing that I am seeing on Facebook, that is pissing me off, is intended to calm people down.  Pictures of Klansmen and ISIS stating that ISIS is no more representative of Islam than the Klan is representative of Christianity; implying that the majority of people believe that ISIS=Islam.  But I have no idea who those people are, as I have never met any.

I've stopped commenting (on FB) because one time I pointed out some differences, including the fact that ISIS governs an area the size of the UK, to which it was replied that the Confederacy was pretty big.   :o  :P  I just don't have the energy to take that on.

I'm thinking that, if they were wise, they'd leave Assad alone to rule whatever has left; they'd allow the establishment of a Kurdish state; they'd allow the establishment of an Iraqi Shiite state, and then focus their attention to smashing ISIS and replacing it with an Iraqi Sunni state (under the thumb of the Jordanians or Saudis).

We're trying to consolidate the political commentary here, and leave this thread for reporting news developments. I think I'm caught up reposting everyone. :)

That sounds a rational solution. Everyone wins, except ISIS.

QuoteOn November 5, nine days before the terrorist attacks on Paris, a 51-year old Montenegrin was stopped on an autobahn by German police. The officers found a revolver in the man's glove compartment and continued searching the car. They discovered that the vehicle had been professionally modified to create secret compartments for weapons. The cache reportedly included eight AK-47s, two pistols, two hand grenades, fuses, detonators and a half pound of TNT. The man had driven from Montenegro through Croatia, Slovenia and Austria before being stopped in Germany. The GPS in his car was set for Paris.

That points out another problem in monitoring terrorists' movements- keeping western gangsters from selling guns to terrorists who are already in place.

I wonder if re-establishing border checkpoints would help.

As I have stated previously, if the Turks don't like the idea of a Kurdistani bulwark against Jihadiism then they can get their asses into Northern Syria toot sweet and start kicking ISIS butt like they actually mean it. It's not like the Turkish army is small potatoes or anything.  ::)

Saw on the news this morning while passing by, that Russia now accepts the results of bomb residue on the Airbus explosion; Putin vows to kick ass, and has started aggressively bombing ISIS sites in Syria.

Or, uh, y'know, sites in Syria that might have heard of ISIS one day, something like that.  ::)

(I'll be curious, considering his past record, whether he's actually aiming at ISIS now or using this as an excuse to aim at more of his putative ally's foes.)

(OMG you guys, I just thought of a great title for a thread: Putatively Putin!  :D )
