I think that's a little too little too late, from where I'm sitting.

It's great of them to finally catch up to 1997 standards with the Vassal file and all, but I've long since committed my gaming dollars and time to companies that respect their customers.

I found the rules to be very tedious and unfriendly, especially the close combat rules. There are better tactical level games out there.

I've played it some. There are parts of it that are enjoyable, but not enough that I'd swear off other games for it.

I picked this up when they first announced it a few months ago. Took them awhile to ship it to me, but it got here eventually. I have to say: the quality of the pieces is astounding. They're easily the thickest counters I've ever seen. I'm a bit put off by the art on the leader counters, esp. as compared with Combat Commander and so forth. And the rules seem a little finnicky to me, so I haven't really gone beyond playing through a couple of turns. It didn't blow me away, and I haven't made the time to go back to it.

The thing that really attracts me about Panzer Grenadier, however, is that they have modules and scenarios for almost anything you can imagine, up to and including hypothetical 1946 Soviet/Allies conflicts. I chipped in for CSW's annual fund drive last year, and I got a P&P version of "Indian Unity," which has scenarios for battles during the 1947 breakup of India and Pakistan. I think that kind of stuff is pretty cool. Variety, attention to lesser-known conflicts, etc. is something the hobby needs more of

What I think is less cool is that the scenario sheet for "Indian Unity" says: "This module is not playable by itself, but requires ownership of our Afrika Korps, Cassino '44, Eastern Front, Road to Berlin, Desert Rats and Elsenborn Ridge games to enjoy all of the scenarios."

I'm sorry, but fuck that. That kind of dependency whoring is insulting (and expensive). Because of that sort of thing, I can't imagine getting too into Panzer Grenadier.

A shame, too. Because that free "try PG playset" is actually pretty nicely done.

What the heck, ordered one to check them out. Bummer the shipping to Europe is a whopping USD22, but hey that's all I am playing so more than happy to give them a go.

I received this one earlier this week as well. Unlike the Lock'n Load demoes, this only ships with the game board and counters, but not with rules. I had a chance to do a booklet print of them yesterday at work, so will try this one out at some stage too. However, with Lock'n Load providing a more complete experience they get the first go. ;)

But yes, counters are pretty cool, thickest ones I've seen anywhere!
