I've played 92 hours (it fell over Thanksgiving).  I've enjoyed this Fallout more than Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas.  I've gotten totally sucked into the world.

I've been largely ignoring the main quest and been deep in the Faction Quests of the Railroad and the Minutemen.  I've also been exploring a lot.  This has mostly been a Sandbox game for me.  I really like a good Sandbox RPG.

IMHO all of the Fallout Games cause you to lose interest once you have completed the main quest.  But this is such a huge world with so many locations you can play the game a very long time while not going very far in the main quest.

One thing I miss from Fallout New Vegas is a reputation score with the various groups.

sandman2575,
there is one benefit i know of:
you can farm fruits and 6 plants need one dedicated worker, a special receipt with 3 different fruits can be cooked into 5 pieces of glue, and glue is often in short supply for modding your weapons and armor.  so it make sense to have at least your main settlement as a 'glue'-production.

if the number so settlers is capped, and you use the settlers as runners to connect (all) the workbenches a certain number of settlements is needed to have that workforce handy

i guess later in the game shops give the opportunity to buy rare resources (maybe weapon parts too), and you can sell stuff at home without finding a traveling trader to get the necessary coins for shopping elsewhere when a random opportunity opens up?

I think finishing the main quest wouldn't sit so badly with me if the path I chose hadn't forced me to eliminate 2 entire factions. Why decimate the game world this way? It makes no sense and speaks to a larger problem with FO4: it's over reliance on "just kill everything" as the mindless default way to complete missions/quests.

Having no BOS in the Commonwealth particularly sucks. Not because I especially liked them (I didn't join their faction, after all), but because they added a very cool element to the game world. I really liked just randomly exploring and then suddenly you'd see a Vertibird swoop in to take on a group of super mutants. I liked that this was going on despite my presence -- that I co und just watch the cool spectacle unfold.  Well, so much for that.

I'm seriously tempted to start a new game, with the mindset of ignoring the main quest as much as possible, and definitely avoiding getting to the stage where you are forced to pick a faction and become enemies with the others. Once the game branched into that "endgame" plot line, it was all downhill in a game I've otherwise enjoyed immensely.

Having a settlement grow corn/mutfruit/tatos so you can craft the veg. starch that gives you adhesive is definitely nice -- these are the only things growing in my Sanctuary garden, because what's the point of planting *anything* else?? -- but honestly, this is really the best thing my settlers give me. Vegetable starch.

Pretty much have talked myself into a restart. This time, I'm not going to deal with Sanctuary, period. I'm going to make Red Rocket gas station my main base of operations, since it is *way* cooler than Sanctuary in every respect. I'm not going to bother with settlers, or the Minutemen. Just gonna 'go rogue' and do what I want without the headache of building up a bunch of meaningless settlements, constantly being asked to clear out nearby ghouls, etc. And this time, I'm definitely not going to take out the BOS, since I like having them around...

I still haven't played Fallout 4, but this article was funny. The guy that wrote it created a character with maxed-out Luck and Charisma, and nothing else.
