Much as I love Nicolas van Rijn, and the Polesotechnic League, my feeling was Dominic Flandry's universe was better.

I really need to get back to reading more Poul Anderson books.

I think I may have read that one. I'll consult the chaotic Staggerwing bookshelves. My favorite Poul Anderson books were his Time Patrol series, as well as War of the Gods and the King of Ys.

Interesting article (and website).  Thanks for posting.  Admittedly, at the time I was playing Traveller, I really had no idea that other people could be playing a different "type" of game.  We primarily played  a "plausible science" based campaign, which meant we didn't have things like psionics or space worms, etc.  It wasn't until a few years after I had stopped playing that I ran into a GM at an FLGS who started telling me about his campaign, which was basically "superheros in space" that I realized how varied the Traveller universe could be.  I suppose that is what made the game so endearing to so many.
Now, the problem is, how to divide five Afghans from three mules and have two Englishmen left over.
