So, Grim Dawn (by the Titan Quest crew) is coming...?

I normally enjoy getting my ass handed to me once or twice, with a new game.  It can be encouraging.

But the despair is there!

The tiny 5mm pistol or basic combat knife you start with in Underrail is only meant for slow tickling in front of a fire.  Meanwhile, the mutant animals bite more in one turn than your favorite dominatrix.

I'd like to get back to it too, eventually...I only put in a couple of hours. But, I still have Wasteland 2 which I should play before Grim Dawn, I think. I dunno what my hangup is on that one.

I've put Wasteland 2 Director's Cut on hold for awhile.  Between reports of them screwing up the camera view, and some other bugs after the big DC upgrade, I'll wait a bit longer in the hopes some of it will get further patch(es).

I did enjoy the original Wasteland 2 so it'll roll around again eventually.

While Grim Dawn pronounces itself a "post-apocalypse" setting, it's still very much a fantasy setting.  Not near-future post-apoc.

Every now and then, I get an itch that only an action RPG can scratch.  Sometimes it itches for a while. . . . ))  Torchlight II has been my favorite, but it's just a little too cartoony graphically to keep me going indefinitely, plus it just gets harder and harder as you go on, and eventually I get tired of running from the respawn point back to the fight.  So I mix in a little Diablo II and Path of Exile.

Until I found Grim Dawn.  Grim Dawn is flat-out better than those games.  Combat is frequently challenging but never all-but-impossible - nothing like, e.g., Diablo II, where most combat is a total stroll in the park until you come to one of the nearly-unbeatable bosses.  Also unlike Diablo II, you actually use your equipped weapon in your attacks instead of having your main special attacks pull some entirely different weapon out that you must be keeping in a special pocket somewhere.

Really my only qualm so far is that the armor isn't special-looking enough, but that is a premature gripe because I haven't taken a character all the way through, or even near the end, yet.

I'm not at all sure if this is a game that will appeal to general gaming fans - my action RPG-addicted self is looking for how the finer points are handled.  Grim Dawn wins with well-balanced and flexible combat, a realistic graphic style, and large, well-stuffed maps.  Highly recommended to other ARPG addidcts.

I've read that some of the purchaseable class abilities are far less useful than others, but that was also the case in Titan Quest iirc and nothing particularly new for these types of ARPGs.

Grim Dawn has been released several days ago.
Reviews are very positive.

"Pilots do not get paid for what they do daily, but they get paid for what they are capable of doing.
However, if pilots would need to do daily what they are capable of doing, nobody would dare to fly anymore."

I've probably sunk about 30 hours into it so far.

IMHO this is what Diablo 3 should have been. I know not everyone likes the Titan Quest skill tree but it allows a ton of customization and they added some additional systems above and beyond that.

Really for me it passes the fun test...and really nowadays that's all that matters to me.
Insert witty comment here.

I am running the Demolitionist archetype on my main character. Feels quite powerful right from the start, but I am sure that will change once I run into higher level monsters.

The lighting and shadows engine in this game is absolutely gorgeous! Special effects glow onto other objects and sharp as well as soft shadows look very realistic.

The only thing that bothers me is the starting toon customization (none) and its looks and animations. But once you find some decent gear he or she starts to look more epic fairly quickly.

I like the fact that you can also craft things to fill up the gaps in your build and I am looking forward to the factions system and seeing what effect it has on the game long term.

I completely forgot that this was an Early Access game when I got it. I can't imagine how much it's changed since I tried it out about a year ago.

I've put in at least several hours on every class, and also on most of the 2-class combos.  Yes, it appears to me that some skills are better than other skills - however, every class has winner skills.
