Sadness. I haven't seen everything he ever has been in -- although in college I rented a film with him as the (eventually rapey) antagonist of an obscure Prisoner-ish British dystopian movie (possibly adapted from a two person stage play) against Madeliene Stowe, the title of which I've forgotten -- but I didn't know he had ever played Rasputin, much less won an Oscar and GGlobe for it! I shall have to check into this.

Aside from his practically-cameo appearances in the Potter films, I'll always remember him best for his trio of awesome villains, in Die Hard, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves ("Because it'll hurt more, yooooouuu twit!"), and (less known but clearly a cousin to those characters) Quigley Down Under.

Just read the news a couple hours ago; another great talent lost.  :(  As with Bowie's death, I was completely blindsided by this; I didn't know know he'd been battling cancer.  RIP Mr. Rickman.

Heard about this this morning on the way to my first stop.  On Mike & Mike, of all things.  My kids knew him as Severus Snape.  I knew him as Hans Gruber.  Sorry to see him go.  RIP.

His last movie, A Little Chaos, is very delicious.  He plays a very droll, bored, King Louis XIV.
