My brother says Vin's best role is in Boiler Room, a comedy drama early in his career about marketing penny stocks.

More drama than comedy and he wasn't in it a whole lot from what I recall. I believe it was supposed to be a break out movie for Giovanni Ribisi (much like F@F was supposed to be a breakout role for Paul Walker)

Don't understand the hate for Vin, everything I've heard he's a pretty stand-up guy plus it doesn't hurt that he's an ubergeek (I believe he still has a long running D&D game going on)

Yeah, he seems like a decent guy who happens to be a part-time nerd. 

I don't think he has a very wide "range" as an actor, but that can be said for many of them.  They tend to get type casted into some mediocre-to-bad movies with poorly written lines.  I think that's why actors such as Vin and Ryan Reynolds catch so much criticism; the crappy movies they're in, more than any single other reason.

I actually enjoyed the first two Pitch Black movies.  Even the second one, for the interesting setting content - the one with the Necro-whatevers.  But many of his character's lines were just written so terribly.  Luckily they weren't very long.
