All I need to know is that they ported the original game into the new setting as appropriate; any improvements and new additions are icing.

Although I hope the improvements include real differentials between lasers and plasma. In the original UFO/X-Com, there was a legitimate debate about whether to upgrade along plasma or laser: plasma did more damage, but lasers didn't need ammo. In XCOMEU/EW, plasma and lasers operate exactly the same except plasma hits harder. Not even a debate, go with plasma when you can get it.


Anyway, relatedly here's RPS's report on what the Long War mod team will be doing first for XCOM2.

The reviews on Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/xcom-2/critic-reviews) are a bit better overall than the reviews on the original (http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/xcom-enemy-unknown): 91 to 89.  And my current favorite big-time review site (PCGamer) gives it a 94.  Only 5 of the 32 Metacritic reviews are below 90.

The general attitude seems to be: same game, but better setting, more polished, better balanced.  But it is pricey, isn't it?  Facing what is probably a long wait to get this baby at a reasonable price, too - what to do, what to do. . . .
