5.0 Night Raiders [H3.6]

A period of rising tension, sparked by the U.S. announcement for withdrawal of the 2nd Division, has characterized relations between North and South Korea.  Border incursions by North Korean special forces have increased and several acts of terrorism, carried out in strategic cities (e.g. the destruction of Pusan's main railway signaling centre), have been identified as occurring under North Korean instructions.  The rhetoric issuing from both governments has become increasingly bellicose.  In order to show commitment, the U.S. has moved the 7th Fleet to the East China Sea and has sent across both ground reinforcements and munitions.  Although a number of U.N. resolutions have been passed, condemning the belligerent moves, only the U.K. and the Australians offer more than vocal support.  A U.K. Marine Commando is flown to Twenty-Nine Palms and two frigates sent from the Gulf.  Australia offers a battalion of troops, a DDG, and two frigates.

This scenario was inspired by the situation depicted in the Sea of Dragons publication from Clash of Arms.

1.0 SitRep:

South Korean forces are desperately trying to organize.  Striking them while they are in port and vulnerable will greatly help our cause.

Act I: Onslaught

"In a carefully planned series of attacks, the Warsaw Pact begins a war against NATO.  Their goal is to seize West Germany, gutting NATO militarily and economically.  The Soviets will demand a high price for Germany's return, or assimilate its industry and technology for their own use."

"One of the strategic imperatives for the Danish and Federal German (West German) Navies in the opening days of a large-scale war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact is the mining of the narrow straits in Danish waters.  A successful campaign of bottom mining would bottle up the Soviet Baltic Fleet and its Polish and German Democratic Republic (East German) allies.

The capacity of the NATO forces to lay minefields was staggering.  In just one sortie of all capable vessels, the Danish and German forces could lay over 3,000 mines.

As open warfare erupts, NATO Naval Command issues the order to close the straits to Warsaw Pact shipping.  The first lift of mines has gone off without a hitch; the ships returned and many loaded more mines, others converted back to their primary role as attack submarines and missile patrol boats.  The second sortie, designed to thicken the initial minefields, has just left harbour."

This scenario was inspired by the situation described in the "High Tide" compilation from Clash of Arms.

I am unable to get a database to open. I can't find H3CD.

The H3RE gives me a run time error after pressing one of the "buttons"

DB portion of the scenario editor seems to not be working. I use the drop down and I can get a long bullet button list of equipment, but there are no other buttons in the window. I then have to close the program and start it over.

You may already have done this in a video, but I think there's a Harpoon scenario ("Return to the Kola Peninsula"??) about a nuclear strike on the Kola Peninsula by B-52s and A-6s. Sort of end of the world, but I'd really like to see this scenario run by somebody who knows what he's doing

I've been neck-deep with Rimpac the last few weeks and have been hankering for some modern naval warfare.  I was a bit underwhelmed with Naval War Arctic Circle- fun, but I find that "...a detailed Defcon..." is a fair evaluation of NWAC.

I booted up H3ANW tonight and, man, I had forgotten how deep it is.  Unfortunately I had a CTD, so I'm going through the painful process of patching it right now.  Hopefully I'll be able to get it up and running again shortly.

NWAC is the only game I know that can actually make ANW look good.  At least you got it to run!

I am sorry to hear of your ANW CTD.  We've documented at least 25 ways to do this already.

I hope that there is a solution to your problem.  If you need help trying to run down the cause of your CTD, you'll have to provide additional details.  If you want a head-to-head match, just let me know.

Hey Herman,
I got it to run- it was a patching issue.  You'd think, in this day and age, they (Matrix or whomever) would provide a comprehensive patch but maybe there's some reasonable technical issue that prevents that.

At any rate, I got it patched and booted up the "Dawn Patrol" scenario, the classic Harpoon slugfest.  I don't have PowerPoint installed yet, so I couldn't do an AAR like I had hoped.

Interesting scenario, though.  For everyone else, it basically pits a Norwegian patrol group against a Russian patrol group off of the Norwegian fjords.  The Norwegians have 6 PTMs plus a lite FF while the Ruskies have an unknown number of small boats inbound.  The Norwegians start with one SAG with 5 PTMs and the FF, with the 6th PTM in the fjords to the northeast of the Norwegian SAG (to the southwest, offshore the coast).  The Russians are somewhere north.

I split off 2 PTMs from the Nor SAG to picket.  I kept the close in 6th PTM in the fjords to ambush the Russians.  I got some intermittent ESM hits from my big group so I sent in my easternmost picket ot see what was up and VID them.  I was in full EMCON.  I got within a few miles when the Russians went active and caught all of my ships in ASM range.  It was very bloody.  I got off some Penguins but within seconds I lost my easternmost picket, my lite SAG with 3xPTM and the FF.  My westernmost picket escaped.

I pulled the west picket north, meanwhile, I had the Russians essentially sandwiched between my west picket and my fjord guy.  I pulled the fjord guy out and then did a pincer on the Russians.  I was discouraged since I was already down 4 ships, including my FF, but I figured I'd just finish out the scenario anyway.  Got some intermittent ESM from the previous location of the Rus SAG so I figured they were all close.  I went intermittent active with the west picket, got a solid hit and then it was like a wild west quick draw.  I think it was mutual destruction.  So now I have one PTM vs. two Russian Nanuchkas.  We cat and mouse going intermittent active, then I zig zag for a half hour, close to last datum, go active and unload with everything I have left for two kills.  Victory!

Tough, tough fight.  I thought I had lost for sure after the first salvo, but it really shows you how bloody modern naval combat is, where I can lose 5 ships including an FF, but then salvage the game with two surviving PTMs.

Fun stuff...I really forgot how much I love Harpoon.

That sounds like a great fight!  Dawn Patrol is probably the scenario played the most of all the Harpoon scenarios.  It truly is a classic.  A good balance between forces.

"In a carefully planned series of attacks, the Warsaw Pact begins a war against NATO.  Their goal is to seize West Germany, gutting NATO militarily and economically.  The Soviets will demand a high price for Germany's return, or assimilate its industry and technology for their own use."

"Large scale strikes by Soviet Naval Aviation (SNA) on NATO port facilities and energy infrastructure slow reinforcements and disrupt transportation.

Spetsnaz attacks further disrupt transportation and communications lines.  One group, landing in Norway, cuts a critical North-South reinforcement highway.  Soviet forces, landing near Tromso, Norway, rapidly secure the northern third of the country, then head south.

Keflavik, Iceland, a vital base for maritime patrol aircraft and fighters as well as a SOSUS station, is pounded by land-attack SS-N-3s from Echo II-class SSGNs.  Using a combination of fuel-air-explosive and persistent chemical warheads, this vital base is neutralized for the critical opening phase of the war.  By the time it recovers, the Russians figure it won't matter.

The first few days of the war find the Soviets advancing through Europe and NATO reeling.  Decision-makers in Washington, London, and Paris must decide whether or not to use nuclear weapons to redress the imbalance."

"The first major convoy, escorted by a group led by USS Leyte Gulf, has left the United States enroute to Germany.  SNA strike regiments have mounted a number of small-scale operations without success.  Naval intelligence has positioned assets to predict the time before the Soviets attempt a full-scale strike on the vital convoy."

1.0 SitRep:

Soviet Naval Aviation has exacted a heavy toll from NATO shipping.  NATO has replied in turn by attacking SNA bases on the Kola Peninsula.  One such attack severely damaged Shagui.

This scenario was inspired by the situation described in the "Battles of the Third World War" compilation from Game Designers' Workshop.

A period of rising tension, sparked by the U.S. announcement for withdrawal of the 2nd Division, has characterized relations between North and South Korea.  Border incursions by North Korean special forces have increased and several acts of terrorism, carried out in strategic cities (e.g. the destruction of Pusan's main railway signaling centre), have been identified as occurring under North Korean instructions.  The rhetoric issuing from both governments has become increasingly bellicose.  In order to show commitment, the U.S. has moved the 7th Fleet to the East China Sea and has sent across both ground reinforcements and munitions.  Although a number of U.N. resolutions have been passed, condemning the belligerent moves, only the U.K. and the Australians offer more than vocal support.  A U.K. Marine Commando is flown to Twenty-Nine Palms and two frigates sent from the Gulf.  Australia offers a battalion of troops, a DDG, and two frigates.

Re-supply will be an important part of the Imperialist's war effort.  A combined task force has been infiltrated to an anchorage on islands bordering Maemul Sudo, with the expressed aim of disrupting any Japan-to-Korea convoys.  Destroy as many of the ships in the first major convoy to leave Japan as possible.

1.0 SitRep:

As part of the invasion plan for the Western Combined Army, a joint Marine and Special Forces regiment is to be inserted near the town of Sokch'o.  The convoy will set out from Wonsan and will use darkness and the cover of the shoreline to achieve a safe transit.  Contact with the enemy is to be avoided unless the safety of the transports is compromised.
