The US needs to face off China now, while it still can. In 10 years it will be a very tough prospect, with economic and military dominance growing as it is.

Reading about mass Chinese immigration loyal to China's Communist party made me think. What if localised Chinese populations start to outnumber the native populations in Africa (or elsewhere)? If they have voting power in "democracies" they may get direct representation, or at least strong pressure on national governments to jump whatever way Beijing wants. This could seriously undermine the interest of other countries, as well as undermine the US's lead as global superpower.

The face-off is coming. I agree that sooner is better than later. I'm not sure that 10 years is the window, but I also don't see us pursuing a 600 ship fleet to bury the ChiComms.

The Chinese economy is in a lot worse shape than most people realize.  Commodity prices is a good place to start looking.  If their economy was growing as they claim, commodity prices wouldn't be in the crapper.

I heard something interesting the other day.  They've put a hard floor on the price of oil.  I think its $40 right now.  They're using the extra money to try and clean up their environmental mess.  That means that Chinese and Chinese companies are paying more for oil than we are right now.  Those little things start to add up that may slow their economy down more.

Quote"The US isn't really challenging any Chinese maritime claims, and in fact is helping to support them by conducting an innocent passage, which is allowed within 12 miles of someone else's territory," said Bryan Clark, a former top aide to the Chief of Naval Operations. "If the U.S. wanted to challenge China's and other's claims, the ship would conduct 'military operations' such as running radars or conducting helo ops. It did not do this."

Mirth is right. If you follow a policy of appeasement with totalitarian regimes you will either fight at a disadvantage, or be overrun.

This really hit home with me when I watched BBC's This World: The war room. Lady Falkner scared me the most. I just hope she was playing a character role (and not presenting her real views): An appeaser to despots, and unwilling to launch nukes when she knew civilian centres were subject to nuclear launches. She came across as a moral coward who should not be let anywhere near a war room. I expect had the situation been real, and she remained in the character played she would also be happy to be part of a Quisling government too. Just scary.

China continues to get frisky.

The report goes on to say that these are HQ-9's, similar to Russia's S-300.

QuoteThe Chinese military has deployed an advanced surface-to-air missile system to one of its contested islands in the South China Sea according to civilian satellite imagery exclusively obtained by Fox News, more evidence that China is increasingly "militarizing" its islands in the South China Sea and ramping up tensions in the region.

The imagery from ImageSat International (ISI) shows two batteries of eight surface-to-air missile launchers as well as a radar system on Woody Island, part of the Paracel Island chain in the South China Sea.

It is the same island chain where a U.S. Navy destroyer sailed close to another contested island a few weeks ago. China at the time vowed "consequences" for the action.

Is there any longstanding historic justification for China claiming 80% of the South China Sea, or is it just the school bully who hasn't learnt to share?

It's an agressively expansionist communist dictatorship that thinks they can get away with it and so far has.
