I pre-ordered -- less out of huge excitement over this year's rather incremental changes than out of the desire to support Markus & Co.  $35 is a low asking price for a game of this magnitude, IMHO.

I've pre-ordered as I'm a big fan of the i'm a sports management games in general and this series is amongst the best.

....and this series is amongst the best.

So, a question to everybody.  As a Brit, I have no feel for baseball at all.  I sort of understand the mechanics of the game, but don't know the history, the players, the league systems, the movement of players between teams, and so on.

Right, so the question is, could get I get one of these games and "Moneyball" it?

I'm from the UK myself as well and I only had a basic understanding of the workings of US sports. As a big football (soccer) fan the salary cap, the college system, divisions, conferences, the draft etc was always a bit of a mystery. It's actually games like OOTP, FHM, Front Office Football, the Fast Break series etc. that has deepened my understanding and increased my appreciation of  US sports in real life.

A good way to learn the about the intricacies of the game and the sport in general is to follow a good quality 'Let's Play...' series on YouTube. You can also just jump in and makes tons of mistakes, find out why it was a mistake, and just gain knowledge that way.

I appreciate what you're saying, but my point is could I just take the Moneyball approach to the game and succeed, rather than try to learn about the sport?  This is more of a hypothetical question really - I doubt I'll actually spend the time/money on the game to find out.    I suppose I'm interested in the idea in general gaming terms, rather than learning about baseball (though I've nothing against the sport).

Personally, I would think knowing baseball basics would be important to not only enjoying the game, but also knowing what to do in the game....I couldn't imagine trying to manage a baseball club without either already having the knowledge or willing to invest the time to learn at least the basics.  You may want to try the demo out, would give you an idea if something you could enjoy.

Going off on a tangent here but it looks like the Beyond the Sidelines game from OOTPDevelopments is back on track with a new developer on board:

I'd forgotten all about this game after it got indefinitely delayed when the previous lead developer had medical problems.
