I saw this earlier this evening. It may be of interest to anyone with holocaust survivors in their family or circle of friends, whether in Israel or elsewhere.

It is very sad that many of these people who have been through so much are left in poverty... and yet Germany has paid millions as "compensation", which doesn't seem to be targeted as well as it should. It is also interesting that any holocaust survivor arriving in Israel after 1953 (according to the program) is entitled to help from the Claims Conference in New York if they have not had any yet.

Let's just say that if any citizen here is entitled to some well deserved money, our government will do its outmost to make sure they get it instead.  >:(

Is the report inaccurate? It gave me the definite impression that many people who had survived the Holocaust were slipping through the net and not getting the money due to them, particularly if they came to Israel before 1953. Clearly there are sources of help, but the report was saying that people were not even getting advice on what was due to them. One woman featured was being helped by an Israeli lawyer, and it appeared she was due about 2,500 euros... and she was reported as being in her 80's.

I didn't post this thread to snipe at Israel, but to raise the profile of what appears to be an issue for people who had suffered in the camps, and now did not seem to be getting enough to live on. I didn't make the report, so if the report is inaccurate please say why it is so.

Yes, my error. I misread your post and was scratching my head at why you appeared angry at mine.

Anyway, I thought the report disturbing. Apparently a lot of the money due Holocaust survivors goes to "good causes" but not to all survivors. Even the Claims Conference apparently had an embezzlement scandal costing millions of euros a few years ago, but the panel trustees still remain in their posts. Clearly, there has been a lot of money earmarked for the survivors, but many don't seem to be getting it.

It is all very sad. The survivors have been through a truly horrendous time - one of the interviewees had her entire family killed in front of her (and she was left for dead) just before the Russians liberated her camp. She was clearly still traumatised - even in her eighties, and yet she and other Holocaust survivors were searching for food thrown away at a Tel Aviv market just to survive, as she had insufficient money to live properly. She and her fellow survivors were being helped by volunteers who were also angry at their treatment. I thought the whole matter was scandalous considering what they have been through - especially as they are entitled to help with considerable monies set aside for that purpose. :(
