I do like slow but I'm starting to think there may be too much slow here for me. I'm starting to grow tired of the balancing act. There is a good, even great game here, but I'm starting to grow impatient. Going to watch the tutorials above in a second, maybe that will help me recover.

Totally forgot about Rise of Venice...how is that?

It's not so easy to make a lot of money with 2-4 cities only. You should focus on the goals of the campaign. When you have 10 cities or more, money will come in more easely.

So if I was looking for a game taking place in the Middle Ages where I could build up a small town into a huge city and trading empire making tons of money  becoming very powerful.... Should  I play this, "Patrician 4", "Rise of Venice" or "Anno1404"?
Anno 1404 is very much a city-builder. Rise of Venice and Patrician 4 are mostly economic simulations with ships. GAM is really about building an empire based on trade.

I'd guess that Grand Ages Medieval fits better to what you discribe, followed by Anno 1404.

BTW: Grand Ages Medieval is on sale on GOG

Anguille the tutorials, while short, were helpful...like me. Thanks!

When it was on the Steam sale I looked at all the negative reviews and thought no.

Then read all the above (after the Steam sale had ended) and thought wish I had bought after all when it was on sale.

Now Anguille tells me it is on sale on GOG - bought and downloading now  :)

So now it's your turn to post your own back and forth :)

Just played for another hour or so and while futzing with everything, my income just kept going steadily down, down, down until I was at like -50,000 every ten weeks! Then it would bounce up for a very short time and go through the same cycle again. Getting frustrated with it so instead of punching through my monitor I am just going to put it aside for now...I attempted to tweak production, minimize building costs, etc. as prescribed in the tutorial videos and nothing I did helped. Going to move on to Anno 1404 - Venice.

I don't want to try to talk you out of your choice or get you to the point where you try to repair your computer with a hammer, but . . .

Did you disband your unit?
Are you frequently comparing overall supply and demand by checking the "all towns" tab, and if so, did you demolish production facilities for over-produced goods?  Goods have per-unit costs, so when you produce goods you don't sell you are throwing money away.
Things are more like they are now than they have ever been before.

Yes that is exactly what I was doing...disbanded my one mercenary unit a while back too.

Mmmh...i guess you made too many expenses at some point. The campaign is a kind of tutorial but not necessary an easy one. First time i played it, i had the same problem...couldn't get out of my debts and restarted from scratch later.

I would recommend to leave the campaign and start an open game instead. Give yourself a lot of money and choose a smaller map. This will allow you to try different things.

Gusington

You know, the fact that you mentioned that you had the same issue your first go around makes me feel a lot better. I didn't delete the game off my drive in nerd rage, I just put it aside for now. Once I get my confidence back up I will come back to it. I really find a lot to like in this game, it just doesn't find a lot to like in me :)

Its an economic game, it dislikes a shortfall.

Do you mean, Short-Fall, Gus' professional name when performing at the Renaissance Fair? BTW, The game's on sale at GOG for $9.99. That's less than Gus charges for his Flaming Juggling Act at the fair.  ;D
