I may finally get around to trying out Star Ruler 2 and/or Gal Civ 3 over the weekend.  Now that the Stellaris vids have me teased for 4x, but still waiting.

Which means I'll probably be able to uninstall GalCiv once again, for being too simple like the previous two, and not feel the need to look back.  SR2 has still been a big unknown though.

GalCiv3 still feels like a big disappointment to me. I've made a few halfhearted attempts to get a game going and every time I've just quit with a feeling of "Man, this is boring". There seems to be a very strange (almost delusional) disconnect between the glowing way Stardock/Brad Wardell talk about how 'innovative' and 'envelope pushing' this game is, and the reality that it on so many levels feels like just a graphically upgraded version of GalCiv2.

In my view, GalCiv3 is Exhibit A in how stale and predictable space 4x has become. While I don't expect Stellaris to be paradigm-shifting original, I do expect it to rejuvenate a genre badly in need of some original thinking.

I agree, and I've not been able to play GalCiv3 for more than a minute or two in the past due to crashing.  Having watched some gameplay awhile back, it just looked like GalCiv 2.  The first two GalCivs were about as simple as 4X can be, IMO.

Just reinstalled it to make sure & confirm that, myself.  I suspect it won't be installed long, just like the others in the series never lasted long.  If it even runs on my Ultrabook without crashing this time.  ::)

Kind of a lot to ask of an Ultrabook, no? I mean, GalCiv3 is pretty demanding in terms of system req. (also its much vaunted "It's 64-Bit!!!" which for some reason was supposed to be part of the game's earth-shattering awesomeness...)

I can play Polaris Sector with ease on a Asus Zenbook with an i5 CPU and integrated graphics, but wouldn't dream of tying to get it to run GalCiv3.

When I say "Ultrabook", I mean the full-size thin type with metal frame.  Not the small "Netbook" kind you may be thinking of.

I've got a 1GB Nvidia GT640M in mine.  Runs it all, although I can't use AA on everything without some fps hits.  Doesn't win any speed awards but does the job.  Has full keyboard w/ Numpad, which is essential for a gaming laptop IMO.

Ah -- yeah, I was envisioning something more netbook-y with integrated graphics.

Carry on!   O0

Sir Slash

Off to see the good Captain beat the snot out of Ironhead today and Sunday I'll TRY to make MOM proud by doing Mother/Family= Boring stuff, so that leaves Saturday for a little Pillars action where my guys are heading to Twin Elms to straighten-out some assassins and then take their shit. Just cause we can. And, because they're assassins. What else do we need? Happy Mother's Day.... Mothers.

Probably lots of World of Warships with Nef, Hancock and others (will probably do my first games at lunch today). Maybe some Civ tomorrow with MD.. Have to work again Sunday  >:(. But then Game of Thrones Sunday night!

And this Sunday night it's going to happen: "tower of joy" scene... R+L=J !
Ned Stark takes on Arthur Dayne. Sorry...nerdgasm

Spoiler alerts, PLEASE. Especially in non GoT threads.  >:(

My wife is out of town on business for 10 days. We've only seen episode 1 thus far and I'm not watching without her. We'll have to watch 2 and 3 NEXT Saturday, just before episode 4 airs.

No problem, but it's not really a spoiler. The books and the show are at the same point and R+L=J is a well known fan theory based on what had already happened and what we saw in the trailer.

Anyway, daughter has a volleyball tourney so time is limited but I have to squeeze in some Mius Front. Like Jarhead, I am waiting for Stellaris and wondering why you would release Monday and not Thursday or Friday

Might give "Sovereignty Crown of Kings" a try. The new version is in Beta and now has buildings that upgrade provinces adding some depth

I'll be working most of the weekend. Going to be nice Saturday, so I have my own to do list for the yard I need to tackle. I'll also probably need to drop by the office sometime as well to get a head start on next week.

Going to spend most of my non-work time watching Stellaris content on YouTube and Twitch. Even though its out Monday, and I have pre-ordered, going to see if I can get into contact with Paradox and get a press key. Probably wont be able to but it never hurts to ask.

After playing on of the CMANO US Naval Air Power Debate scenarios on my stream last week, it inspired me to do one of my own. While the US Naval debate scenarios are good I feel the scenario author decided to throw everything and the kitchen sink at the player. While my F-35s handled themselves well, no losses, actually completing the objective is very difficult. My scenario is going to focus on seeing how USAF legacy strike packages (F-15/F-16's) and modern strikes of F-22's and F-35s do against both legacy aka outdated and old air defenses and fighters vs modern air defenses.

Assumign I have the time, I'd also like to continue my exploration mission around the galaxy in Elite. First major waypoint is the witch head nebula, from there I head out towards the galactic rim.
PanzersEast: Have to think to myself.... will I play the first one by the Winter Sale?  Probably not, then I should remove Dragonfall
PanzersEast: but that is thinking too logically.... and Steam Sales are about ignoring Logic

I think what could be interesting is the new tech like this razer core that use a usb3 type-c connection and basically provide you with a desktop gpu to drive gaming on a laptop.

I just built a new system (minus a new gpu which should arrive in June when the new Nvidia cards ship) so I will be continuing to get things installed and playing a bit. Moved from using dual 1920x1080 monitors that I use for work to a single 27" 1440p monitor. I love the change, and it almost makes me wish I just made the full jump to 4k. Most likely I will be playing Diablo 3, Offworld Trading Company, and Battlefield 4 this weekend.

I tried another game this week - on holiday - but found it all a bit sterile.  I thought I was doing quite well on a one-on-one campaign, only to find that, when we eventually met, my opponent's graph had shot up exponentially about a day before.

Meh - disappointed.  No soul.

Clearing the plate for Stellaris, so I'm not starting anything that can't be finished in an hour or two.  Probably lots of Twilight Struggle, filled in with some Axes and Acres and Human Resource Machine.

I really liked HRM, though I'm stuck on level 17 or so - anyone else tried it?

So, after our heroes cleaned up the Redbrand scum at the Sleeping Giant in Phandalin, we decided to play a card game.  Cards Against Humanity.  If you've never played, you should get a bunch of your friends together and do so.  The ruder the better.  However, we played CAH with a twist.  Instead of having a hand full of answer cards with which to fill in the blanks of the questions asked, we played Match Game style.  We had two contestants and a panel of four 'answerers.'  I read the questions, the panel members submitted their answers face down and then I asked the contestant for their answer to the blank.  A matching answer between contestant and panel member is a point for the contestant.  We were going to play the first to five wins, but, we could only get to three.  But some of the answers we got, from contestants and panelists, were gold!  If you have the game, and the requisite friends of questionable moral turpitude, you should try it.

The weather was so nice here that we spend all weekend outside....

I therefore had just little time to play and only managed to play Master of Orion and continue my Darlok campaign. I still don't know what to think about the game. It has some nice features and various things that don't work well. I do have fun with it but as per now, i think it's the weakest MOO game to date. I just don't see how they can improve it enough without going at least through 2-3 other EA releases. I still prefer it over Endless Space at this point.
