Freediving caves in Florida

Saw a link to this vid over on a surfing forum. I've scuba dived this spot before, but damn, freediving this stuff is just stupidly dangerous. Cool video, though.

After I watched that video I found myself browsing more freediving videos online today. Thus inspired I decided to do a little freediving myself this afternoon.

I will admit, it is so epically less awesome when the visibility is 8 feet (which, frankly, is pretty outstanding in the northeast this time of year).

Had a chance to do a cave diving trip in Mexico when I was there last, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. It does look appealing - it's just the drowning if something goes wrong part that appears to spook me :-\

I did a cave dive off Saipan. It was very cool but also a little nerve wracking even with a decent sized group of divers and a full tank. I cannot for the life of me understand what motives certain people to take these kinds of risks.

And yup, a quick search of the place I dove and one of the top videos to pop up is of a free diver in the same cave system.

How long was your dive ?35-45 minutes ?

I can't remember exactly but I don't think it was that long. Maybe 20-25 min?

Watching that video made me remember the worst part which was hauling the tanks, weight belts, and regs back up those stairs.

Cool videos O0 I've only ever tried snorkelling , but I'd love to try diving ...it's on my to do list ::) the thought of diving with no breathing apparatus scares me to death though , so I'd definately NOT be free diving ! Plus I can only hold my breath for about 30 seconds under water , sooooooooo I don't think I'd be the right sort of candidate for it :D those caves look stunning though , hope y'all enjoyed the scenery down there when you went diving , toonces and SDR :)

Cave diving and mountain climbing (i.e. Everest) are two things my conservative, dare I say, "scardy / cowardly," fat ass is never going to do.

Nuh-unh. No way.

Note: I have done rock climbing here in western NC, so I'm not adverse to climbing mountains per se. Just want to avoid the man-killer ones.
