I haven't played it for a while, but tried today.

It keeps crashing after the loading screen. i.e. press play, loading screen, back to library. There are no messages.

I've done the following...
Unticked the dlc restarted, then ticked the dlc and restarted. (Emperor of Melon's failed solution)
Deleted the appcache, restarted Steam, then Civ5
Verified the files

Short of reinstalling (which I don't want to do, as I have lots of dlc and mods [all of which worked last time I played]), what are my options. It seems quite a few people on the Steam forums have this problem. My rig is sufficient to play the game - it worked fine last time I played it. So what might work, or is this something for Firaxis support to look at?

Any help is appreciated. :smitten:

Right click on game in list > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache (Sorry.  I think you have done that already.)

Wolfe1759

Just had a go myself to see if it worked.

Starts fine and get to the main game options menu.

Select to start a new game - starts up OK.

Select to load a saved game - crashes to desktop with no messages.

Sadly I didn't even get that far. I got the little menu where you choose your DX type, then I got the loading screen. When that had finished it returned me to the Steam library. :( :idiot2:

Hmm couple of things I've found that can help.

1) check steam forums...they'll probably have some suggestions there.

2) Have you installed any new software lately? New AV or firewall? Try disabling those to see if it works.

3) I have had games go wonky with MSI afterburner...close that if you use it.

4) Last and not least...but the biggest pain...a DX update might be borking it...it's the biggest PITA because first you have to figure out which kernel (or version, or patch, forget what they are called by MS) then decide between keeping it or uninstalling.

Also check the config file...sometimes non-matching resolutions can cause an issue...typically for older games but you never know.
Insert witty comment here.

Thanks Jamus  :)

What you say makes sense, but in the context of my Civ5 setup none should apply, as I've made no systemic changes since I last played Civ5 - which of course played just fine then! :o

I'll browse the steam forums a bit more, but sadly I don't seem to be alone there with other people getting the same issue. I wish Firaxis support were active, as hopefully they could fix this. :'(

As Jamus says it may be the firewall...I had a very similar issue with Shogun 2 because of AV software.

Thanks Gus. :)

Sadly no. I have had Norton 360 for years. It would have happened before now. Thanks for the thought tho'... keep 'em coming. O0

What is worrying is this seems to be a common problem on the Steam forums, but it seems that nothing much is being done about it. I'd be very happy to see Firaxis or 2K post a fix on the forums, otherwise the game is unplayable. Also the failure to load save games that Wolfe1759 ran into seems to be very common on the Steam forums. Again no fix seems available - all very disappointing. :(

Very bizarre. I got it working again. I deleted all my workshop items and re verified the game files (but I'd done the reverifying last time too). Now it works. I tested it on the kids Mac too, but it was working fine. It seems it was a Windows issue. Very odd...

Win7, but many of the people who have had problems had Win 10.

I got a nice and helpful reply from 2K support (pasted below for the benefit of anyone else who gets this problem) which suggests you do pretty much what I did just before I got the email (although I also got rid of my workshop subscriptions in the event they were affecting compatibility. I'll gradually re add them (hopefully I can remember what I had! ::)) ).

Thank you for contacting 2K Customer Support and for your interest in Civ V. I'm a big fan of the Civilization series myself and I fully understand how this can be frustrating. I will give my best to resolve this issue for you!

Please do each of the following, to ensure that the game and all its additionally required software is properly installed:

Verifying Game Cache
· Load Steam.
· From the Library section, right-click on the game and select "Properties" from the menu.
· Select the "Local files" tab and click the "Verify integrity of game cache" button.
· Steam will match the local files to the cloud files, and fix any errors it encounters.

Reinstalling DirectX
· In the Steam installation folder of the game you're having trouble with, there will be typically be a DirectX setup package.
· Example file path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meiers Civilization V\DirectX\
· Find and run DXSETUP.exe
· Reboot the computer (mandatory)

Reinstalling Vcredist
· Navigate to your game's Steam folder – there will typically be a Vcredist folder.
· Example file path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meiers Civilization V\vcredist\
· Find and Run vcredist_x86.exe
· Should the files already be installed, you will be prompted to either 'uninstall' or 'repair'. Choose 'repair'.
· Reboot the computer (mandatory)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If that doesn't resolve the issue, we will need to see your DXDiag and MSinfo files to perform a deeper investigation of your system specs.

This Support Article will show you how to access these files and attach them to your reply.

Once we receive the DxDiag and MSinfo files, we'll investigate your issue and update your ticket.

Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us again.
Go forth and conquer!

This happened to me awhile back and what worked for me was just verifying the local cache.   I saw it didn't initially work for you so I didn't speak up but am glad you got it work8ng eventually.

Boggit

Thanks Jorum. O0 Yes eventually, after searching for an answer and trying lots of different things. I just wish I hadn't had to spend hours to get it fixed. ???
