Bought this is one of the sales quite awhile back but am just now giving it a serious try.  Went through all the tutorials and started a game.   My question is regarding technology research.    It would appear (unless I am wrong) that in spite of there being a number of different tech tabs/trees, i.e. military, industrial, etc.,  you can only ever have one item being researched at any given time, not one in each tab/tree, jsut one in total.   Is this correct?  This would seem quite restrictive, but maybe it was meant to be that way.

Research progress occurs in all fields at a default rate.  You get to choose one area to focus extra effort on in order to speed progress up a little.

Interesting.....so even though I can only focus on one at a time, there is still progress being made in others?   I didn't realize that but it certainly makes sense and makes the entire tech research aspect of the game more believable.

I don't think thats accurate at all.  I think you're thinking of EUIII.  In V2 you only research one technology at a time.

Rayfer,

To help you're research along, put your mouse over your research points and a popup will open showing where all of your points come from.  At the start of the game, you may want to have a national focus training clergymen or depending on your tech level, clerks.  National focus points are based on population and tech level on the political thought track, located in the culture section.  If you want to know about your national focus points, place the mouse over the NF points, which is right below population.  On this screen shot is says 2/2 in green.

Hope this helps

OJsDad is right. You influence Research through Administrators.  From the manual:

Research Administration
Your Research Administration type will determine for which Techs you have
advantages to Research.
You may change your Research Administration type through Decisions, which may
become available at times

Thanks for the clarification....it is most helpful.  Maybe reading the manual would be good idea.

To be honest, I dont' know if it is possible to research all techs in a game.  With that said, you really have to decide what kind of game you want to play, and choose your research based on that.

Here are a couple of examples;

If you want to play as China, then you need to become westernized.  There are a few techs that are required, among some non-tech requirements, to westerize.

If you want to be a colonial power, then there are a few techs in all of the major areas that you will want to go after.

I purchased V2 on disk, and there was a strategy guide included in PDF format on the disk that is very usefull.  Not sure if that was included in the download versions.

You're right.  I was confusing it with Pride of Nations.  Sorry for the misinfo, Rayfer.

Supposedly a good start is saving your first months worth of research points up, then immediately dumping them into the first Tech that gives a bonus to research % as soon as it pops up as available in the next year.

Evidentally you don't have to choose anything in order for your points to build.. so you can wait and decide whenever for insta-techs.  ???

I'm finding some good strategy advise on wiki.  The more I play this the more I like it.  It's 1850 in my first game and the Civil War is threatening over the slavery issue. Then out on nowhere (probably it was somewhere that I was failing to monitor) Britain invades the USA hitting upstate New York and Washington/Oregon.  Mexico is my ally but couldn't beat back the Brits in the west but I was able to defeat them in the east ending up in a peace accord.  Your choices sure can haunt or bless you for years and years.

OJsDad

If I remember, the AI plays Britain aggressively.  So, even if don't want to play as a military power, you have to maintain a strong military to discourage them from declaring war on you.  The US tends to be a target that they like to go after.  I think they have shared lands in New England that the US owns and they want back.

Another common early game complaint is Austria (or was it Prussia?) instantly invading & taking Holstein before the game every gets started.
