Trek Wars Beyond dropped 69% on its second Friday. Sounds about right.

Everyone I know who has seen Beyond has liked it. Still, I can't bring myself to see it in the theater. I'll watch it online at some point.

Yep, although it may get me thrown into a lake, I generally feel TMP is the weakest of the films.  It's close between it, Final Frontier and Nemesis, but from a sheer watchability standpoint TMP falls flat to the bottom.

My reasoning?  First, it's too much a rehash of the classic, and much better TOS Episode "The Changeling".  The movie tries much much too hard to be a copy of 2001 a Space Oddssey, complete with opening orchestra, intermissions and extreme long shots to classical music.  It has, by far and away, the worst costuming of any Star Trek on TV or film.  It adds unnecessary characters to the detriment of original cast members that could've been given a bigger role and screen time.  Its characterization of Spock is disjointed and bizarre, and clearly tacked as a result of the initial impression that he'd be unwilling to work on the film.  And, well, honestly I could go on, but suffice to say that despite horrendous flaws in Final Frontier and Nemesis, I felt like they at least succeeded in being more watchable, even if some of the ridiculous plot points in those films were far more glaring than TMP's failings. 

I think I give TMP a harder time because it actually had a higher potential that it failed to live up to, where Final Frontier and Nemesis were DOA.  If TMP had been shorter, more tightly plotted and didn't feel like it wasn't exactly what it was, a rewrite of a TOS episode that was originally meant to be the pilot of Star Trek Phase II, I'd have it higher. 

Really TMP is the example of what was very wrong with many of  the Phase II scripts.  It didn't know what it wanted to be, a sequel or a remake.  There was so much rehashing of the TOS in those scripts, that I'm very very thankful Phase II was shelved as I worry it'd have set Trek back a lot.

TMP was a victim of Roddenberry and his vision of what Star Trek should be.
