As previous folks warned, this game is brutally hard.....I can't even win during the tutorials:)  The difficulty might be the main thing to keep me from investing because from what I see of everything else, I am liking it.  Graphics are decent, customization is decent, music is good, and like the concept of leading a group around on missions.  But wow, I get destroyed all the time.  Just when I start winning a fight, 2 or 3 other enemy backup show up and quickly dispose of my people.

Really?

It hasn't been all that difficult for me.  Yet.

While I often have 1 or 2 guys take a fall every mission, they usually recover afterward.  Or are out of action for 3-5 days.  A pretty rare maiming (had it happen once in about a dozen mission).

I've had to pull out early one time when some pretty beefy enemy heroes got too much of a jump on me.  But it wasn't too bad.

Over time, it's obvious that some characters will get mangle or killed, but it's been fewer than I had expected going in.  Just gotta keep your team together (use manual setup), move as group, and focus down vulnerable enemies ASAP.  Positioning and reactive or defensive abilities can help the enemy charging at you.

If you can keep your team together, it's fairly easy to complete the objectives without loss.  It's the missions where your team starts spread out over 3 locations on the map where you run into trouble. The AI will rush the smallest group and overwhelm your guys before you can consolidate.

Yeah, you're first job is to try and get everyone into a single mob

Grim.Reaper

After I posted, actually won (3) straight missions so maybe things turning around...I was able to attack with multiple people and for the most part stay away from being attacked in groups.  Strongly considering making the purchase...

Yeah, the first few missions are tough because your warband is so small.  Once you get a full band going, it gets easier to gang up on someone and beat them down.  One on one fights are for suckers!

Can't argue that:)  Quantity sure does help.  Question to players who have played a long time.....does it get repetitive for you?  Although I am liking the game play, starting to feel that each mission is generally the same.  I am way early in the game so that could be it, but just wondering if it keeps your attention for a long time.

Until now I have been splitting the team up and have been destroyed every time. Following recent advice here I kept them grouped and have won my FIRST battle..haha...I decimated the opposition and only two warriors hospitalised. (I gotta pay their medicall bills! How can that be right?) ;)
Hold my beer and watch this!

I can see the missions getting rather repetitive after awhile.  I'd expect some of the extra troop type unlocks, and maybe new equipment showing up, would help at some points.  But I've not played it long enough to unlock much in the way of the Warband Ranks to experience the added variety yet.

I've been looking at it more like running the gauntlet, to see how long I can make it.  Or, at least, how long my original Leader character will continue breathing.

One inherent game feature that makes each mission somewhat balanced also makes it feel more repetitive.  The enemy warband consists of exactly the same number and character categories ("Hero", etc).  The only difference in opposing warband makeup is the overall point value (aka level-ups) and specific set of classes from the specific faction you're up against in a mission.

I'd say it's similar to X-Com missions getting repetitive, but there is less equipment variety and you'll always know just how many enemies, and generally what type, are opposing you.  So enemy forces are less of a mystery in Mordheim missions.   On the other hand, the long term meta-game has some interesting stuff, such as the aforementioned maiming of characters, to push an occasional tough decision on you.  Being forced to take your highly experienced but one-armed, or crazed from a head wound, soldier into battle or kick him out of your band and replace with a noob that costs money to hire.  Maybe the odd handicapped combatant will keep things a bit fresh.. I dunno.

Along with the skill/ability customization available for each of your characters, Mordheim seems more focused on the long meta-game.

Silent Disapproval Robot

There are story based missions to break up the random ones and they're a lot more intricate and involved.

The missions can get a bit repetitive but as you progress, they get a lot deadlier once the really nasty hero types start showing up.  They're also a bit more tense because it really, really sucks to lose a top tier guy in your band, especially if you don't have the cash (you won't) to hire a decent replacement instead of a level 0 shrub.

Did anyone buy this during the sale and not enjoy it?  I mean, not enjoy it enough to, say, gift it or trade it away? :)
PM me if you're interested.

I ended up not buying...it was a decent and interesting game, but towards the end felt repetitive...but I could see myself picking it up someday in the future.

If I didn't like the setting, I probably would've waited longer too.  Think I got it on a dirt cheap Xmas sale or something, though, so it didn't hurt the wallet much at the time.

I think of this game much like I do Blood Bowl.  Of course, it came from the same boardgame pedigree so that's not surprising.  The problem with these games is the huge need for as many factions & troops types as you can get.  Makes a big impact on reducing repetitiveness, more so than some other PC game genres.  Unfortunately, Mordheim has only... 4 or 5 factions available right now and the troop selection for each isn't terribly extensive.

I'd like to see someone port Frostgrave over to a digital game.  Generally similar to Mordheim but the campaign, and focus on your wizard characters' customization, could be more interesting for the long run.

New DLC is out today.

Undead warbands.

That's some classic vampire action right there.  I really hope someone makes a Scooby Doo mod to fight them.
