Plans to the contrary, I ended up mostly playing PBEM turns this weekend. It seems that most of my opponents have returned from holidays and the game turns are flowing again!


I did manage to get OSG's The Last Success set up for the Eckmuhl scenario. I intend on playing that this week, and probably doing some videos of it.

Honestly, 80 bucks isnt worth collecting rocks and looking at the product of an evolutionary gangbang. Whats even the point of upgrading your weapons and ship anyway

Upgrades do have relevance. There are loosely three ways to play the game. Explorer, trader, fighter. Upgrading ships and technology permit you to fly farther and faster while hauling more loot and causing more damage in combat. There is definitely incentive to upgrade.

I'm still stuck with vanilla ED and happy with it.  You need to buy all the add ons of ED to reach the same scope as NMS. So NMS is probably a "poor man's ED". A "simpler" game too. :)

I kinda liked No Mans Sky. Love the exploration aspect. Though it does get repetitive and pretty much overhyped.  Another unique goal in the game is to learn an alien language.  I've met two alien races and they speak different languages. So what you learn in one is not usable on another language.

I've done little combat in my hours of gaming.  Combat is tough and punishing and I'd rather save the limited the slots for non-combat tech and resources for now. 

So far it is harder to move around planets and galaxies in NMS compared to ED.  The resource management to power your suit, weapons, ships is punishing with limited storage slots.  Launching your ship uses a different type of fuel from flying. Jumping between systems also uses a different fuel.  Repairing your ship needs different materials. Not to mention your suit's life support system needs to be sustained.

Though vanilla ED does space combat and flight really well. And has an engaging contract and trading system to keep you busy.  You take for granted the things necessary to keep your life in space possible as you can just buy stuff using money.  In NMS, though you get to also buy resources from the market, you get to appreciate things more as you can also gather resources to sustain yourself from the planets if available.

But it lacks the structure and goal oriented contracts of ED.

ED is S$78 for me in Steam. NMS is S$59.
Besides, I already have the base ED game and I think I have to buy the add ons individually.

I got my new Pinball machine this week.  It is an electronic simulation that plays 351 pinball games.  It is amazing.  The Pinball FX2 games on this machine have to be seen to be believed.  Most of the simulations of classic arcade pinball games (about 290 of those) are quite good.

One of my favorite Christmas presents ever as a kid was a full-size pinball machine, which I got when I was in 5th grade...I played the hell out of that thing with my friends all the way through high school until it finally gave up the ghost.

I think I have heard or read that there is something similar for arcade games, like you have the standing box and then have hundreds of arcade games that can play through it.  If/when I ever move into my final house, I think something like that is on my must-have list for the man cave.
