Just hoping y'all in Florida - Starfury, Sir Slash etc all remain safe, and hopefully you don't get your homes damaged.

According to the news it is a Cat5 hurricane with an 11' tidal surge (Katrina that hit New Orleans was a Cat 3). Stay safe guys.
The most shocking fact about war is that its victims and its instruments are individual human beings, and that these individual beings are condemned by the monstrous conventions of politics to murder or be murdered in quarrels not their own. Aldous Huxley

Remember that Katrina itself isn't what wrecked New Orleans. It was the levee breaking afterwards from the storm surge.

Hey Brant, are you in for any of this after Florida?

bbmike

From the projected path I think Florida is in for it after Florida.

We're going to get more rain than normal, but the wind / lightning isn't supposed to be any worse than a heavy thunderstorm here.  I'm far enough inland that unless the wind blows a tree on a power line, we should be fine.

Think it was briefly a Cat 5 a few days ago, but right now its a Cat 4.  I've got a sister that lives a bit north of Charleston, SC and she evac'd a couple hours ago.  Hope it keeps steering east.  Any Grogs in its vicinity, stay safe and dry!

Thanks for the Well-Wishing all but we should be just fine here-- just some wind and rain tonight and tomorrow. My wife's cousin lives Titusville on the east coast right in Matthew's path. She called him today and offered our place for him and his family but he said they were going to stay where they were. People get used to the small storms that come close and don't take one like this one seriously. But a Cat 4 at it's center is like a Cat 4 tornado out in the mid-west, it'll leave nothing behind but wreckage. But the good news is my Son-In-Law's named Matthew so I get to make bad Hurricane-Jokes about his name.

This storm is close to maximally bad for property right on the coast.  A storm surge of 7-10 feet clobbers stuff close to the beach.  That much of a wall of water also makes streams and rivers reverse their flow for a ways inland.

But Haiti is where the worst of this was.  They don't have the infrastructure.  They also lack property rights so there are no trees (really - look at Haiti vs the Dominican Republic on Satellite.    Haiti is brown.).

we're getting rained on pretty good here, but the wind hasn't been too bad, so far

Had a few smaller branches blow down, but power is still on, and not expected to be a problem.  Might take a hike down the hill to see the creek in a bit; should be pretty high...

I really hope this storm starts moving east and out to sea.

Nah, I just don't want to have to make a mad dash to Reedville to secure a bunch of stuff. More like laziness.  :P

We survived. My car had tree branch take out the back window and we lost power around 230pm yesterday and it's still not back, but parts the neighborhood are coming back now, so I hope ours is back soon. No damage to the house but some limbs in the yard to clean up.

Could've been much worse us, but we're ok. Picnic dinner by firelight last night and early to bed.

When our European cousins ask why we have our overpreparedness fetishes, this is why.
