She's only 60 years old but from what I've read so far, extended CPR and in critical condition at the hospital, it doesn't sound good. B_C can back me up on this- very few folks who required more than a few minutes of chest compressions survived long afterwards. Hopefully she will be one of the exceptions.

She's 'Wookie' tough. She had to be. All the men in her life kept leaving her, or trying to torture her, or blow-up her planet. Or kill each other. Or make her wear her hair in that damned bun-thing. I hope she makes it back full strength but I don't know...... maybe Heaven needs Princesses too.

Damn. I just heard about this an hour or two ago. If they were doing chest compressions all the way until landing and off the plane to the ER then the odds are very long.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Carrie Fisher is in stable condition after suffering a medical emergency aboard a flight Friday.

Her brother, Todd Fisher, told The Associated Press that she was "out of emergency" and stabilized at a Los Angeles hospital Friday afternoon. He said he could not discuss any other details about what happened.

You're very correct, Stags - CPR/chest compressions is NOT the life-saving technique that movies and TV shows make it out to be. It's a very artificial means of attempting to keep circulation going and oxygen in the blood (albeit very low amounts). 

I don't hold much stock in what the people in front of her were saying (with Carrie not breathing for ten minutes), but if she really WAS not breathing for 10 minutes, even with immediate CPR, she probably suffered some brain damage, unfortunately. That's generally what happens - everyone's different, though, so there's no telling; she may beat the odds. I hope she does, anyway. Being on a plane wouldn't have helped, with the pressurized cabin and all, but if they were truly 15 minutes out of LAX they might have already been descending and had the cabin depressurizing slowly.

Thing is I think Carrie was a copious smoker (is still?), which likely means COPD and decreased O2 saturation in her blood, just from smoking. She'd already have had trouble keeping her body 'fed' with O2. Even if she quit smoking, if she did it a long time, she damaged her body's ability to process/take in oxygen already. I say all this because it makes CPR even less effective.

Carrie Fisher is being treated in an intensive care unit after a serious medical emergency on a flight, according to her brother.

On Friday night, Todd Fisher told The Associated Press that his sister was receiving excellent care, but said that he could not classify her condition. He had earlier told the AP that she had been stabilized and was out of the emergency room.

So, it's disturbing that they won't announce her actual condition, and that she's in an ICU. Being out of the ER is not an "out of the woods" thing at all; the ICU is for critical patients that are way too unstable for the 'normal' care of a hospital. Their unwillingness to expand on her condition is a big red flag that says she's in some dire straits right now. :(

You're probably right. I should say 'she was 21 (or maybe still 20) when SW was running in theaters.' It did take a little while to film the movie, after all.

I was 17 when Elvis passed (he was my very first live concert two years before). I remember a line I wrote for our school newspaper......"Elvis, the symbol of our parent's youth". It was the same year I, like so many others, developed a bit of a crush on Princess Leia. I saw Star Wars 13 times the summer it debuted. I had broken up with my girlfriend when school ended and Star Wars was a wonderful way to forget life for a couple of hours. The words I wrote about Elvis so many years ago kind of haunt me now. I wouldn't have thought of Carrie Fisher as the symbol of my generations' youth, of my youth, but in a way perhaps she is.
