Five signs of real gaming addiction...

...or how not to die like some South Korean gamers.

1. Disrupted regular life pattern. If a person plays games all night long and sleeps in the daytime, that can be a warning he or she should seek professional help.

2. If the potential gaming or Internet addict loses his or her job, or stops going to school in order to be online or to play a digital game.

3. Need for a bigger fix. Does the gamer have to play for longer and longer periods in order to get the same level of enjoyment from the game?

4. Withdrawal. Some Internet and gaming addicts become irritable or anxious when they disconnect, or when they are forced to do so.

5. Cravings. Some Internet and gaming addicts experience cravings, or the need to play the game or be online when they are away from the digital world.

Yeah, silly South Koreans. Everyone knows its better to die like an American. You know - in a church or movie theatre, at the hands of a psychopathic gunman.  ::)

Perhaps we can agree to avoid the offensive stereotypes in the understanding they don't accomplish anything? FWIW the gaming addiction stories I'm most familiar with come out of China, but there are stories out of Netherlands, USA and Canada that have reached international audiences.

7. Whenever you sit down at any computer your hands instinctively go to your FPS key mapping positions (A, W, D, your pinky on shift and thumb on the space bar.) :)

I find myself watching a WWII movie and my fingers are trying to move the mouse to change the camera angle or hit the pause button. Do I have a problem? No? How about when the movie's over and I stand-up and yell at the screen, " I'm gonna re-load and beat you bastards next time"! This is especially embarrasing at the theatre.

No offense meant, but the first paragraph in the news article leads:

South Korea is perhaps the world's leader in terms of identifying and treating gaming and Internet addiction. After wiring the nation with the world's fastest broadband infrastructure, South Korea's government spends millions per year to identify and treat gaming and Internet addicts.

CNN has run several articles on South Korean gamers recently, and not insignificantly, has mentioned how several have attempted to become professional level gamers and instead died.

Sorry if that offended you, Michael. I guess I was reading that last article in a context others weren't.
