Man, a little scotch and a little Amsdel sounds like heaven right now.  I've got too much to do this weekend, so I skipped buying some scotch so there'd me no temptations.  I can't afford to lose a day to a hangover.

A Tale of Two Oceans.

So there are two online cameras that face one another at First Beach in Newport. 

The first picture is a more accurate depiction of what it probably really looks like out there- dirty gray green water, wind blowing spray off the waves, cold and not all that inviting looking.  You can see a surfer just paddling for a wave in the foreground.



But this one could be Hawaii...well, maybe not Hawaii, but look at that beautiful blue water!

So, for perspective, in the first picture, my usual surf spot is at Second Beach, which is just beyond that castle-looking tower in the background. 

In the second, blue picture, the world famous Cliff Walk starts at the base of the cliffs in the background at the far end of the beach.  Just in case you were wondering.

Could also have something to do with the angle of the sun and the way blue light scatters. The pix look to be from opposite directions.

Yes, he said they're from opposite directions.

I'd say the big difference isn't scatter so much as contrast (or something like that) since the first pic has a giant ball of sun for the camera to try to adjust to.

^ I'm sure it's that, or something with one camera being better than the other.

I just find it interesting because if I only saw the blue picture I'd be pretty excited about going surfing.  But that ugly gray, cold, murky crap...ick.

Blue light is more readily reflected by water than red but the angle that light hits water can also determine how much gets absorbed.

There's also the blueshift factor, although I'm a little unsure it comes into effect at those distances. But since the light is bouncing somewhat more away from the camera in the photo with the sun 'behind', there has to be at least a little of that going on.

Having worked with cameras during my bachelor's degree, though, I'm still going with some variety of 'unable to adjust for direct glare'.
