is HOI 3 with expansions worth the time?

I have already purchased HOI 3 with the Semper Fi and For the Motherland expansions. The issue is cost then, it is whether or not I want to invest the time in it. I have played EU 3 and CK 2 so i am not completely unfamiliar with paradox gaming. I dont see many here talking about it which is surprising as it looks complex and detailed. So.....i your opinion, is it good enough for a novice to spend the time learning? Not sure there is another WW2 grand strategy game as detailed.

Hearts of Iron III is one of those "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" games. Some gamers like it and others don't. So if I were you I would give it a try myself instead of relying on the opinions of others whose tastes in gaming may or may not coincide with my own.

Whichever way you go with it, good luck!
Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.

Well, normally I would just give it a go instead of polling the community. But I know that many paradox games like EU 3 take hours of gameplay before you can really get a feel for it. At this point, I have a good feel for which members of the forum have similar tastes and such so I'm just curious.

Free time for wargaming is very limited for me so i would hate to force myself to learn this thing only to waste 4 valuable hours.

If guys like you, Keunert, jarhead and Jomni tell me its a turd, I would spend my time on other stuff.

omi, no. I'd rather play HOI2 with mods/expansion.

If you are going to invest time, I would do it with Crusader Kings 2. Obviously not the same theme, but a far superior game.

Yes, indeed.

I've not properly vetted HOI3 yet, by playing it long enough but I do like their setup and the mechanics for the most part.   It feels much more groggish on the military unit side, what with the command organizations & such.   I was pleasantly surprised at how deep it could possibly be, much more so than EU3, and I'm glad I purchased HOI3 (even though it's WW2).

There have been some good words about it since all the updates & expansions so it's obviously improved quite a bit.  Supposedly the popular AI mod helps a fair amount with the AI's attacking, too, so you may want to grab that right off.

Yeah, I think I will give it a shot this weekend finally. SoM, I do play CK2 as well buy I don't think it will quite satisfy my itch for world war 2 German grand startegy....

I haven't kept up with it, but I don't remember hearing loud cheers that HoI 3 had been properly fixed. Folks can correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my understanding that there were a bunch of really vexing bugs that never got properly worked out of the game. If you're looking for that experience, HoI2 has some great stuff going on with it, and I've heard good things about the Doomsday version, too. Start there, see if you like the game style, and then worry about HoI 3...or 4.

I really like the game...but it is limited.  Grand strategic AI still regularly makes some bone head moves, but holds its own at the operational level.  For example, if the human German invades Spain, the AI Britain will send all of it's land forces there to fight in Spain...leaving the British Isles wide open for invasion.  Or, Soviet AI, ignoring a German take-over of Turkey.  So you kind of have to play the AI with part of your brain tied behind your back; so don't exploit a wide-open UK, or invade Russia from the south. 

Hopefully the new expansion deals with this AI issue....but probably not.

My concern about HOI2 is running it at high widescreen resolutions. 

The buttons, text, and all that when running EU2 hi-res has been frustrating and trying to accurately click on stuff is painful.  HOI2 has a better interface than ye olde EU2 but it's still gotta be an issue.
