The New York Times has not viewed a copy of the memo, which is unclassified, but one of Mr. Comey's associates read parts of it to a Times reporter. I understand that but from what I read Trump didn't ask the investigation be ended only that leak be given a higher priority. Would that be a crime?
Of course I could have this all wrong and with Trump what is said one day is contradicted the next.

What I have read is that Trump tells Comey "I hope you can let this go", regarding the Flynn investigation. Supposedly that is what Comey wrote in his memo. I have no inkling if that would be an actual crime or not and I would lean towards not. But it adds more to the burning trainwreck that the Trump administration has become out of the gate. And notably the impeachment standard of "high crimes and misdemeanors" is very much open to interpretation by Congress and was meant to be so. Don't get me wrong, I'm skeptical that events are to that point yet, but Trump is giving Republicans plenty of rope to hang him with and less and less reason to not do so.

My understanding is that the memo(s) are not actually in Comey's hands but rather secured within the FBI. Either way I'm pretty sure it's a matter of time, and short time at that.

The Times article didn't mention that part. If so, I wonder who is leaking it.

Honestly I follow so many news sources I know I heard it but couldn't quote you where, so take that for what it's worth. If Comey was intending these memos to potentially be part of an investigation, I would imagine keeping them in a secured FBI facility was the correct thing to do. As an aside, Morning Joe reported last week that Comey's firing was so abrupt there was initial discussion over whether he would be allowed to fly the FBI jet back to D.C. from his speaking engagement in LA and that he wasn't allowed to enter the FBI building to clear out his desk.

Well if the memo is in the hands of the Bureau and they are allowing evidence in a possible criminal case to be leaked to the press, it's not great optics for them.

Meh, the Bureau has long been known as a leak factory when someone gets on their bad side. And if there is an ongoing criminal case, it could be argued that releasing information piecemeal isn't the way to go. Federal prosecutors generally like to utilize "shock and awe" tactics. I really wonder what else they might be holding close to the vest.
