Thor: Ragnarok

Just saw it today.  Really really liked it.  Any quibbles I have would be minor. Two thumbs up.  :bd:

As usual, the MCU stays pretty faithful to the heroes and their origins but changes the storylines they're borrowing from around. A lot. And often changes the villains around a lot, too. (The Red Skull being one exception.)

Case in point, Surtur was the Big Bad of the original Ragnarok comics story (so far as I recall), but here he's kind of a comic relief villain who ends up as a convenient way to dispose of the movie's villain Hela (and to shake up the MCU status quo before Avengers 3). The divergences are almost as far as the "Age of Ultron" or "Civil War" plotlines. (Although the "Planet Hulk" plotline in the film goes even farther off base.)

That isn't a complaint, really, just an observation along the way to introducing some comments on the adaptation of the classic Thor villain Hela. Which is awesome, we all know that, but I noticed that they changed her quite a bit and I was going to comment on how she's also barely kind-of an adaptation of another classic Thor villain Amora the Enchantress (in her association with Scourge the Executioner, and some of her flirty-aggressive attitude which is unusual for Hela so far as I recall).

But then this guy made a much more in-depth video about her character compositing. Good job, heretofore unheard of Youtube guy! I'll be looking into his other videos soon. They pass geek spec nicely, and are well-produced.  :bd:

A cool idea that's only barely hinted at in the film, but which was originally a more explicit plotline, is that Hela was originally imprisoned somewhere by Odin (in "hel" maybe or Niffleheim one of the "heims" I don't recall which, Niffle is where the frost giants live so not there -- or maybe it was there and that would explain the rumors of Hela being Loki's mom in the story), not quite the same place in Marvel comics canon), she broke out, Odin sent in the Valkyries to weaken her enough for him to take down and this time imprison her in his soul. That's why she escapes again once [spoilers] happen and would also be a MCU explanation for the plot-convenient Odinsleep where he has to recharge his energy from Asgard occasionally: they both draw power from Asgard (but not Thor apparently? -- I couldn't tell at the end if we should expect him to be powered down now.)

The director reportedly explains this in an interview somewhere.  O0
