I am not saying we in the West are so superior as we have our far share of nut jobs i.e. the character who made this video causing all the grief.

That video wasn't out long enough for it to have had any impact in Libya. It might have sparked the riots in Egypt, or fueled them to greater heights.

Twitter, Facebook, Youtube etc. This is my point, they have embraced 21st century tech but totally bypassed 21st century reasoning.

Not sure if I've got the timeline right - I thought it was only about 15 minutes between release and attack.

All the talking heads on TV today are heavily discounting the video as anything other than a distraction. The attack was well coordinated and probably had been in the works for a long time. At least that's the message I'm hearing.

The comments continued to contradict initial reports that the attack was a product of angry and violent protests over an anti-Islam film.

Rogers told Fox News he has "no doubt" it was a planned attack and had nothing to do with the film.

The good news is that some arrests have been made, though it is unclear whether they are major players in the operation or just usual suspects pulled off the street.

And the news keeps getting worse.   Now we find this out:

[U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson] did not permit US Marine guards to carry live ammunition, according to USMC blogs. Thus she neutralized any US military capability that was dedicated to preserve her life and protect the US Embassy. In this respect, she did not defend US sovereign territory and betrayed her oath of office. She neutered the Marines posted to defend the embassy, trusting the Egyptians over the Marines.

There's 2 things going on with the attacks/protests

1.  Movie was released a while ago, and the trailer is on YouTube.  The movie isn't new, but the awareness of it is.  Protests have been building in the MidEast b/c of a series of mis-informed rumors about the 'bigness' of the movie (it's not a Hollywood blockbuster), the timing of the release (not released on 9-11, but out for a while), and the 'blessing' of the government for the movie's release (which you never get/need in the US). 

2.  It appears as tho AQ-connected elements in Libya used the protests as a cover for a pretty concerted attack on the consulate.  Not only that, but apparently some of the local national security guys were killed in the attack while trying to protect the consulate, so it's not like it was some quasi-gov't-sponsored mob.

So the protests in Egypt, Libya, and Yemen all looked similar, but in Libya it looks like AQ folks took it a step further.

According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and "lockdown", under which movement is severely restricted.

What I've been saying is that the timing of this event indicates no influence on the attack - the attack was planned in advance and was not triggered by it.

Elsewhere in the world that isn't the case. But in Libya, the "movie" made no difference.

And here's the thing:

It's time to stand up for our values.

We, as Americans and Westerners, have learned to disagree on issues as significant as religion and as trivial as whether toast should be butter side up. We have learned to tolerate disagreement and not kill each other for it. Freedom of speech does not guarantee the right to not be offended. We can either let these crazy radicals push us around because they don't like our movies, how our women dress, what jobs they hold, or whether we eat toast butter side up.

Or we can tell them that they're going to have to live with us in a world where we disagree that showing a stupid-ass-movie should be met with violence.

One of our Founding Fathers, Patrick Henry, was debating with another man about the inclusion of the 1st Amendment (freedom of speech). The other man thought we ought not to have fully free speech.

Patrick Henry replied, "I may not agree with you, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it."

American values run deep. It's time we stood up for them.
