I heard that news a couple of hours ago. Certainly Iran has zero conventional capability to do so. And I doubt they'd have the balls to claim responsibility for any "asymmetric" warfare they start.

Iran could cause quite a bit of havoc in the Gulf region and Suez Canal.  Not every attack would need to be directly on US soil to have a major impact.  Also there are reports of Hamas/Hezbolah operations in South and Cental America and since we seem to have an adversion toward securing our borders who knows what they could actually do here.  Full out conventional, no.  Asymmetic warfare utilizing terrorist style attacks, yes.

Agreed, but this specific threat is directed specifically toward Israel.

I dont know about that.  they could make an effort but it wouldnt go as far as the headaches of the tanker war.  IIRC just about every minesweeper we have in deployed to the area.  its also the one spot where the US, China, Japan and Europe agree should be kept open to maritime traffic.  Im also willing to put real money on the US Navy having at least 2 ABM capable ships in the area

I really hope that Israel does not shoot its bolt with attack that may only be effective in a short term. After Iraq what we need is an obvious proof of Iran's nuclear ambitions. A premature attack will give them an "excuse" which some may use in undermining overall support for solving the problem.
When Iran develops a bomb they still won't be able to use it effectively for a while, but that will be the time that whole of the West, and not just Israel will be able to seriously got to town on Iran (and I meant Teheran). Let the mullahs put their own heads in the nuse. In the meanwhile we should support internal opposition Iran, which share out ideals, in weakening the mullahs regime.

I hope that our combined, allied foreign intelligence agencies are sparing no expense or efforts in attempting to educate the general Iranian public on the benefits of a change in regimes.

I suspect they're air-dropping Katy Perry CD's and other great items to incite the coming revolt. The amazing part is that little brown-jacketed hand-jacker doesn't realize what's coming (if you'll pardon the pun) his way.
