For the past two weeks I've been looking for a decent survival game (like  that is heavy on the shooter side of things. I really loved Empyrion and considered getting back into it but the thought of starting over with the material grind makes me cringe. I'm trying to avoid zombies as I'm tired of that trope. A game that is heavier on the shooter side with some good survival mechanics as well. I've been looking at Valheim or Conan Exiles but I really want to be squeezing the trigger instead of swinging a sword or ax (I'm already doing plenty of that in my Skyrim playthrough). I've tried to search Steam/Google but I'm not really coming up with anything that I find fits what I'm looking for. It would be great to hear from you all if you have any suggestions. Much appreciated! Thanks!

I haven't tried (though I own) Icarus yet, but it's a sci-fi survival shooter where each mission is on a timeclock to harvest stuff, build a ship, and get back into orbit. Don't know how action-heavy it is.

The Long Dark is definitely not a zombie survival game, and it's a modern shooter sort-of, but my impression is that it doesn't have a whole lot of shooting action (ammo being scarce).

I know zombies are played out, and I'm not fond of them as a genre, but 7 Days to Die is the best survival shooter I personally have experience, with lots of heavy action at times, and an experience you can dial in and modify quite a bit. The devs are approaching endgame on it (finally), probably build 23 (22 being next), but some epic mods have created endgames of their own, especially "Darkness Falls", which make it more like "survival Doom" (adding demons to the zombie mix).

All the other survival 1st/3rd Person games I know of personally are either pre-modern (like Medieval Dynasty) or not really shooters at all (like Subnautica).

Or they're primarily multiplayer like Rust (which I've played a little, not enough to have a good impression) or... is it Subsistence? (Haven't played that at all.)

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for but it's free and great. :)

Mist Survival is something else to consider. Monsters and Human enemies. It's in early access and has been pretty regularly updated. It's only $11 when not on sale. i'd put off any purchase since the Steam sale will be active this coming week.

If you want the best survival FPS, got to agree with Jason, 7 Days to Die will give you plenty of trigger time. 7DTD with the Darkness Falls total conversion mod is the shit. Darkness Falls adds more than triple the enemy types, adds demons to the zombie mix. Flying demons and there's NPC's , but there dumb as posts right now. DF adds classes to choose from,  story missions which lead to an end game, hundreds of more POI to explore because they added the community custom POI pack. The sorcery mod is compatible with DF, so if you want to go the flame, ice, lightening route, i mean you can be a wizard with an AK, what game does that. I like to up the difficulty, up the experience gain so you advance thru game stages faster which means the game will get harder, faster. Set the Zombies/Demons to harder settings. I enable the cheat menu before i start my run and kit myself with some weapons about a 1000 rounds of ammo for each weapon and go find a level 5 POI to clear. The new DF mod just came out a couple of weeks ago so I haven't had much time to dive in yet. The game will probably be 50% off during the sale so should be cheap.

I don't buy all the wargames I want, I just buy more than I need.

These are all excellent suggestions. I did try Staulker. It kicked my trash to the moon and back lol. A very deadly game. 7DTD. It looks fun and I'm all about mods. And Subsistence looks good as well. But I actually modded up Fallout4 heavily into a more survival type game with the Horizon mod. All of my other play throughs of Fallout have been pretty short and I did not realize how truly huge this game is until after watching a few people of YouTube.  Yes there are zombies in FO4 but there are plenty of other enemies to help with that gripe. Thanks all for your suggestions. I still may grab 7DTD after watching some play through with that suggested mod that adds favor to the game.
