I never really looked twice at it, because I thought the graphics looked kind of 'toyish'... But it's on sale at both Steam and GamersGate and I'm seeing all these comments of people raving about it.. Is it really that good? I guess for 14.99 can't go wrong and should take the plunge, but curious of the opinions of wargamers who actually own the game?

I can see a lot to like in the scenario or two I've played, in a light Panzer General style game.  But I'm not sure just how much time you'll get out of yet (not played it a lot yet).

One thing that made me scratch my head was the ability to rotate units in & out of a single hex in order to make multiple separate attacks against a single defender.  When you can do that so many times, it's rather abusive in a turn-based game IMO.   That's staple PG, though, so it's not rare - just a weakness in the system.

JudgeDredd

It's a fantastic "lite" strategy game but not easy - a breath of fresh air.

I do not play it anymore - what game EVER lasts more than a month or two with me - but let that take nothing away from an innovative design. It was a very welsome addition to a strategy collection imo.

A steal at the price it's offered at on Steam.

Arctic Blast

Terrific little game that's well worth the price. It's really ALL about supply lines, but that enables the AI to be a devious little bastard. It WILL flank your lines and cut you off from your supply routes.

I just happen to have the link to GamersGate handy. Unity of Command is 25% off.

The only thing I don't like about it is that all units looks like heads.
Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.

Sold!!.. Just ordered on Gamers Gate.. .still about 11 more hours on the sale there.. 6 more hours on the sale on Steam.. lol. it was a 'pressure' buy from the sale standpoint! But I haven't heard one bad thing about it (except and I agree the unit displays).. but hey, looks aren't everything when it comes to strategy games!

There are a couple of mods, one is mine, in the Matrix forum that changes the heads to Nato style units.

I fire the game up every now and then and do some "bubble-popping" (you'll get what I mean if you've played the game).  Must get the NATO mod Bart did.  It'll temporarily satisfy the desire to do some operational ETO stuff but it's typical "line adjust and try to punch through" stuff.

For those who previously bought the game and want it on Steam, you can use this link to get your Steam Key.  I'm not sure if Gamersgate or Matrix codes work.  But my key (bought directly from the developer) works.

Mine didn't work and I got it from GG or Slitherine IIRC.

So this only works for those who bought directly from the developer.

Incidentally, the "heads" only apply to infantry (and mech infantry). There are distinctions between the heads, too -- much clearer than screenshots may indicate. I was pleasantly surprised by that.

The game is very much Panzer-General Lite (except for supply which is much more crucially important), mainly because unlike PG the game is played at the level of corps (or divisions, depending on the side, but basically the same size units, one size under "army"). So there aren't separate anti-air or artillery actions, or any of that kind of thing.

It's really a semi-randomized puzzle game, rather moreso than PG is/was. If you like PG and want something a little different but not as hard (in some ways), then getting this on sale is a very good idea.
